It’s a warm and sunshine-y day today and I’m enjoying a lazy afternoon with a little matcha + reading. One of my favorite things to do whenever I get Christmas money is to invest in different vintage editions of Tolkien’s books. This Fellowship is part of a vintage, minimally designed boxed set! I absolutely love this design of Hobbiton on the cover and it actually reminds me of the logo for ! Which is a serendipitous event since I only discovered this boxed set this past December. 😌

Hello! It’s been a bit since I’ve shown my face on a grid post + I figured it was time I shared some of my Bilbo-esque adventures from last year. 🗺️
•
1 and 10: Evenings around Hobbiton. 🍻 Aka dressed up as Bilbo for the ren faire in Wisconsin. Not pictured is the little stuffed Smaug-esque dragon who was chilling on my shoulder for most of the day.

2: Home in the Shire. 🌿 Aka one of the various lovely forest preserves here in Northern Illinois. I tried to hit up as many as I could over the warmer months.

3: Enjoying the comforts of Rivendell ⛲️ Aka a visit to the stunning Multnomah Falls in Oregon. I could have sat and watched the falls for hours…

4-5: Early mornings in the Misty Mountains. ⛅️ Aka watching the sunrise in the breathtaking Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. I’m not a morning person but these incredible views changed my mind—at least for the day.

6: Exploring the ins and outs of Mirkwood Forest. 🌲 Aka visiting the gorgeous Mount Rainier National Park in Washington. Genuinely one of my favorite places on earth after visiting.

7: Delightful days in Lake Town. ⚓️ Aka one of many trips to my second home: Door County, WI. It never gets old.

8: Made it at last to the Lonely Mountain. 🏔️ Aka one of a few journeys to the beautiful Mount Hood in Oregon with 🥹 The feeling of camaraderie and love for the Dwarves while we listened to mountain tunes will live in my heart forever.

9: Back again in the Shire. 🌸 Aka another shot from Door County—one of my favorites too. The blurry hurriedness of a photo snapped on a walk to get ice cream.

Arda winter holidays are in full swing with delicious food, outdoor activities, and much merriment! Most of these celebrations involve celebrating the solstice, as well as the end of the old year and beginning of the new.

🍪Yule-Days 🍪
This is a six day Shire celebration to usher out the old year and welcome the new, and it runs from December 18th-23rd. Yule 1 and Yule 2 occur on December 20th and 21st and are the last and first days of the year, respectively. Celebrations can include baking, drinking hot beverages, crafting of wintery decor, giving of homemade gifts, and spending time in the company of loved ones.

🌤 Mettarë and Yestarë 🌤
These words mean “last day” and “first day” respectively and are a celebration of the transition to a new calendar year. They occur on December 20th and 21st. This is for the Dúnedain calendars of both Númenor and Gondor (King’s Reckoning and Stewards’ Reckoning.) Celebrations might look like meditating on the passing of the year, a feast of food, and some time spent in nature.

🪵 Turuhalmë 🪵
This “log-drawing” fest occurs in the midpoint of the Elven calendar, right around our own Winter Solstice. The celebrating begins the night of December 21st and continues the next morning, on the 22nd. Celebrations would include the gathering of logs for the tale-fire, snow sports, delicious food and drink, and some storytelling and singing.

This celebration of Yule most likely lined up with the longest night of the year and Shire Yule-Days—making it around December 21st or 22nd, depending on the year. Highlights of celebrating most likely included snow sports and a grand feast of mead and hearty foods in the Golden Hall of Meduseld.

This little book means the world to me as it is my favorite of Tolkien’s works and also my all-time favorite novel in general. Bilbo and Thorin will always remain my favorite fictional characters and I absolutely love their stories being woven together in one grand adventure. 🤎

After just returning from my own adventure to the mountains and wild lands, I am more sure than ever that Bilbo and I are kindred spirits. While I loved the thrill of adventure and the beautiful sights and new experiences…I am so thankful to be back home in my cozy bed, eating my favorite foods, wearing freshly washed clothes, and being comfortable. 🥲

BBC’s Merlin first aired on September 20th, 2008 and our love for it is stronger than ever! So obviously your favorite genderbent Arthur and Merlin have returned—and this time we brought the iconic Morgana Pendragon with us. 🐍

It’s amazing how this show continues to enchant and entertain even this many years later! It even enhances our current friendships. Our lovely Morgana was already a dear friend and once we realized she was also a fan, we knew we had to have a shoot! 🤍

This question is actually very timely for me as I will be venturing out into the mountains for my very own adventure this week with a dear friend. So I’ve had time to think about what is truly essential for a journey…

• First and foremost, I would bring my camera to capture every piece of beauty I see along the way. 🏔️

• Second, plenty of snacks to eat along the way: I am no better than a Hobbit in that I need to eat several times a day. 🍊

• Third, a proper piece of headgear. Whether it’s a bandana or beanie, I think it’s essential to have something to spice up my look, deter bugs, and help me stay warm. 🍂

The Lithedays, also called “Summerdays,” are one of two chief holidays celebrated by Hobbits! These three days (four days during leap years) fall in between the months of Forelithe and Afterlithe and exist at the midpoint of the Shire calendar year. The Lithedays usually fall right around our own summer solstice. Lithe 1 falls today, June 22nd; Midyear’s Day is on June 23rd; and Lithe 2 is on June 24nd. These days are a time filled with merriment, feasting, dancing, flower crown making, picnicking, and maybe even a fireworks show—when Gandalf is around. 🐝

Lithe comes from the Old English word “Liða,” which means “mild” or “gentle.” Which is quite fitting since the Shire experiences very mild summers. I imagine seasonal summer fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers would be the highlight of a Lithedays celebration. 🍒
•
If you recall, Midyear’s Eve, more commonly called Midsummer’s Eve, is very important in the events of The Hobbit. It was by the light of a Midsummer’s Eve’s crescent moon that Thror, Thorin’s grandfather, wrote in moon-letters on his map of Erebor. These moon-letters could only be read by the light of the same moon, which was done by Elrond when the Dwarves came to Rivendell while on their quest. Midsummer’s Eve was also known to be a time when the Old Took held grand parties in the Shire, and Gandalf would often attend and put on a magnificent fireworks show. 🌙

This candle captures Bilbo in his simplest form—as a kind soul with a love for nature and simple living. To me, Bilbo has always felt like a spirit of the spring and summer who fully embraces the warmer seasons and all their merry gifts. He loves gathering herbs like thyme in his garden for his meals and waiting for the delicate violets to blossom in the lane. He loves finding the plumpest black raspberries in the bramble and baking them into the most delicious and buttery crumble. He loves sitting in the Bag End garden, having his face kissed by the morning breeze as he drinks his tea. All the things that encompass how he truly is a child of the West and all it’s kindliness.

Happy April 25th! Today is one of my favorite days in Middle-earth history: when Gandalf arrives at Bag End and proposes the idea of adventure to Bilbo. I love that this moment—and the start of Bilbo’s entire adventure—take place in the spring. When the world is waking up again and the promise of all things new and exciting are on the horizon. 🪺

Much like the quote above I don’t quite remember or know all the details of how I ended up in such a beloved community. Younger Marissa—who read The Hobbit and immediately fell in love with the world of Middle-earth and beyond—would not have been able to guess the impact it would have on her life. To live in a timeline with so many online and local friends that were brought about by these stories…To live a life where I am able to create so many fun products and characters and ideas inspired by Tolkien’s works. I am forever grateful for Tolkien and his tales but also for this incredible community. 🤎

The Middle-earth March prompt for today is “king,” and instead of posting about Aragorn I wanted to honor the line of kings that led to him.
•
The line of succession of the kings of Gondor is messy. It features usurpers and kinstrife, and they truly crowned king after king after king. While Isildur’s line became the Kings of Arnor/the Arthedain—Anárion’s line became the Kings of Gondor. Aragorn ultimately united the two kingdoms together again.
•
But the existence of Aragorn would not have been possible without Isildur and even more, the destruction of the Ring would have never happened if Isildur hadn’t taken the first step of cutting it off of Sauron’s finger…
•
So today I honor Aragorn’s ancestors, specifically Isildur in our own modern version: Isil. She proudly bears the Elendilmir, the symbol of royalty among the kings of Arnor; and a symbolic tattoo of a blade that was destroyed. You’ll found out more about her journey later…🗡️🌒

I have dubbed this month “Mordor March” as I finally have the time to do the full logo and product reveal for the newest university. Keep an eye out the rest of this month for the reveal of candles, apparel and other uni gear! I don’t want to interfere too much with Tolkien Reading Day, so things won’t go on sale until very end of March/early April. 👁️
