Introducing California Academy of Sciences’s newest **permanent** exhibition, California: State of Nature!
Visitors can explore California’s unparalleled biodiversity, spectacular landscapes, and Indigenous science through immersive experiences, animal specimens, hands-on displays, videos, and more. And befitting the San Francisco Bay Area in the 21st century, the Academy presents two augmented reality adventures:
The Shake House, a fan-favorite earthquake simulator, returns with a new focus on resilient structures in nature, plus Monarch, the famed “last grizzly bear” of California, returns to public view for the first time since 2012. Video kiosks for each region show short films to introduce visitors to the scientists, tribal leaders, and community members who are working to protect and regenerate our state’s invaluable biodiversity and natural spaces.
Check out the cool video and follow California Academy of Sciences for more experiences! And for more events check out our own #sfartsmonthly

Pride Night at SF Opera is back!
Pride Night at the Opera (June 26) is back!
Join San Francisco Opera for a special performance of The Magic Flute: Mozart’s final opera comes alive in an acclaimed, inventive production from Barrie Kosky and Suzanne Andrade, conjured from the topsy-turvy delights of silent cinema, 1920s cabaret, early Hollywood animation, and the illustrator Edward Gorey.

Opening in April, two immersive theatre experiences — one taking place in a secret, hidden venue in North Beach, the other in a bespoke club in the Fillmore district — re-create two distinctly different environments. First up is "The Speakeasy: Age of Scofflaws" (April 4-June 23), an extravaganza set in 1927 — a boozy, three-hour-long, flapper-age sensurround-style adventure.
One of the consulting directors on "The Speakeasy," Michael French, attests to the particular requirements of immersive theatre... the performers must have the skill to go off-script, take detours and somehow find their place back.
As is customary in immersive theatre, "The Speakeasy" comprises close-up interaction with the performers, full bars, live music and the freedom to roam around, explore the venue and follow the multiple storylines. No audience member can see all the action.
In fact, says creator Nick A. Olivero, the founding executive director of Boxcar Theatre, which produces "The Speakeasy SF,” “You’d have to see it six or seven times to see all the material.”

We recently joined a private research visit at Letterform Archive, in San Francisco's Dogpatch art district. Executive Director and Curator, Rob Saunders, and Associate Curator & Editorial Director, Stephen “Stewf” Coles were on-hand to help a friend gain inspiration for a graphic design project.
Among the numerous displays and exhibits were these works by famed African-American graphic designer, Art Sims, well known for his many poster designs for some of the most legendary film directors, including John Singleton, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Spike Lee. Here we see several iterations of work considered for Lee's film, Malcolm X (1992).
The Archive opened to visitors in February 2015 and now offer hands-on access to a curated collection of over 100,000 items related to lettering, typography, calligraphy, and graphic design, spanning thousands of years of history.
If you're looking to visit this semi-hidden gem, keep these pro tips in mind:
Free Admission: every Thursday, all year long!
Research Visits (by appointment): "Letterform Archive offers one of the world’s best special collections and design reference libraries. Students, academic researchers, and professional designers with a specific focus can engage deeply and independently with a few materials on a single topic, designer, format, or discipline.
