Word for Word Presents "Who's Dead McCarthy: Stories by Kevin Barry, now through Jul 21 at Z Space — three works from the Irish author and story master. If you like your humor a wee bit dark, these stories are for you.

From SF/Arts Curator Jean Schiffman:

San Francisco’s literary troupe, Word for Word, works its theatrical magic on three short stories by the Irish author Kevin Barry: “Who’s-Dead McCarthy,” a darkly comic tale of a messenger of death; “The Wintersongs,” a poignant encounter between a loquacious old lady on a train and a silent young woman; and “The Coast of Leitrim,” in which an Irish man and a Polish woman form a complicated bond.

The Fraenkel Film Festival (July 9-20) is an 11-night celebration marking the gallery's 45th anniversary, presented at San Francisco’s historic Roxie Theater and showcasing a rich selection of films chosen by gallery artists.

Insight from SF/Arts Curator, Sura Wood:

Fraenkel Gallery invited ten of its visual artists to curate double features, comprised of movies especially meaningful to them. A highlight of the series is what promises to be a lively onstage conversation, preceding the showing of “The Right Stuff,” between two old friends: Berkeley photographer Richard Misrach and the film’s San Francisco-based director, Philip Kaufman, who has evinced an abiding interest in photography.

”I’ve had actors playing photographers,” Kaufman recalled via email. “Brassai in “Henry & June,” Capa in “Hemingway & Gellhorn” — and many of my films have been shaped visually by reference to various photographs and paintings."

11/04/2024

"The Fillmore Eclipse" (April 19-May 12) — an immersive theatre experience taking place in a bespoke club in the Fillmore district — welcomes audiences into a bebop-infused jazz club in 1955.

Director Michael French attests to the particular requirements of immersive theatre. The audience will be drinking and kibbutzing at times just two feet away from the actors. “You can overhear [the audience] even if they’re whispering!” French observes. In directing one scene, he must keep in mind the scene that follows, or perhaps a simultaneous scene happening elsewhere. “There’s no way around the stopwatch,” he says.

“Eclipse” is the brainchild of Michael Epstein, who created the small company Walking Cinema in 2010 to produce theatrical walking tours, podcasts and more. His inspiration was a club called Jimbo’s Bop City that operated mid-century in the Western Addition and staged big names like Sarah Vaughan, Louis Armstrong, and Charlie Parker, among others.

The production suggests postwar peace in the shadow of the looming redevelopment project that would eventually undermine San Francisco’s Black population.
