MY STORY

I was born on 31st July 1958
I'm a typical LEO

Born in Easington Lane then in Co Durham now it's Tyne and wear

My mother was the daughter of an Irish Gypsy woman and her father was a Hawker from Cromer in Norfolk

She was the only daughter and 11 sons .. her brothers. They grew up as young children living in a caravan at Four Lane Ends Hetton le hole Co Durham

My father initially born and bred in Rugby was the son of an Engineer from Greenwich London his mother came from a well to do family in Warwickshire he himself also initially trained and qualified as an engineer

My parents met when my mother was just a young girl who worked in service in Rugby during and after the war (WWII)
My father fought in the second world war and saw action in Egypt and Burma
After the war he also served in India

After the war he came out of the army and they married
moving to the north they were living in Peterlee

At the time of my birth he was a Colliery pit worker at Easington colliery Co Durham

Two additional siblings later we moved back to Rugby in 1962 and my father initially went back into engineering working in a factory but with power cuts strikes and 3 day weeks he couldn’t make ends meet so he came out of the factory and became a truck driver

Rugby had the biggest railway sidings in the Midlands and in those days of steam trains all the steam engines running London to Scotland stopped in Rugby to take on coal and water The sidings also had the engine sheds and equipment for rail engine and rolling stock repairs

Although it was many years after windrush which saw many Jamaicans settle in England after the war
When Jamaican gained it’s independence in 1962 many more Jamaicans came to England and quite a few settled in Rugby working on the railways

Moving down to Rugby that same year 1962 we initially lived with my grandparents and I was placed in a strict Catholic school and taught by nuns

As soon as we found a house of our own my parents moved me from the Catholic school which was the other side of town to a church of England school just around the corner

So it was that in 1964 at 6 years old I befriended and schooled with Jamaican children at St. Andrews Benn CofE primary school

1966 and In fact it was the day before my 8th birthday on 30th July that England won the world cup at football It was also the year that I discovered Ska and Rocksteady music and had my first taste of Jamaican food having frequented the homes of my Jamaican school friends A simple boiled dumpling and rice and peas

Of course I'd already heard my boy lollipop by Millie in 1964 and loved it but who knew then that hearing that music played by the parents of my friends that It was the beginning of a love affair that lasted from then till now

1969 at the age of 11
After years of my father taking me to the barber for a short back and sides I was now in high school and allowed to go to the barber on my own My mother was horrified when I came home with a No4 crew cut with square neck it was my beginning to becoming a Skinhead and still a Skinhead today

1971 at the age of 13 after a couple of years hard work doing 3 paper rounds 2 weekend market jobs and many odd jobs including baby sitting mowing lawns and washing cars I’d earned and saved enough money for my first pair of brogues and a Harrington jacket

It was whilst I was standing in the lounge wearing my brogues jeans white shirt and my Harrington with some Trojan records in one hand and my other hand in my pocket waiting for my mates to knock the door to go to the youth club that my mother exclaimed “get your hands out of your pockets and stand up properly” and with that grabbed my arm and pulled that my packet of 10 embassy ci******es that I’d been trying to hide flew out of my pocket across the room and so my parents discovered I smoked

I guess you could say taking records to the youth club and playing them was an early experience of DJing

Growing up as a child my ambitions were simple I just wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps and join the army be a soldier and drive a truck

I left school at the age of 16 in 1974 Joining the army as a junior leader in the Royal Corps of Transport completing my training as a soldier and driver before being posted to Duisburg in Germany

Signing on at the age of 18 into full time regular service I completed 6 years and came out of the army in 1982

After leaving the army I settled in Birmingham
Living initially in Handsworth I frequented many a blues party around Birmingham and followed many sound systems
My love of Reggae music grew
I did some DJing there mostly at weddings and Birthday parties with mostly popular / chart music

I was working as a truck driver travelling all around the country away from home all week I married and divorced in Birmingham and I began driving around Europe

In 1992 I moved from Birmingham to Ramsgate in Kent and from then on I spent weeks away from home out on the road tramping all around Europe

The year 2000 saw me move north to Skipton in Yorkshire where I married again

In 2003 I bought my first house with a mortgage having previously only ever lived in rented accommodation and moved to Colne in Lancashire

The fact I was away from home all the time meant I never knew what was going on locally until 2012 when I quit driving Europe and came back to UK work It was circa 2015 I discovered a regular Reggae night at the Admiral Lord Rodney pub in the town

Becoming a regular at the pub I soon met a lot of amazing people and a world of local sound systems

In 2017 I was diagnosed with Cancer The Cancer was agressive and it was in my throat and had spread through the lymph nodes around my neck and had wrapped around the carotid artery After the operations and 2 months intensive care

I pulled through and survived cancer undergoing a comprehensive 8 weeks solid every day of radiotherapy and chemotherapy From 2018 onwards it was a slow steady period of recovery and building up strength I started back to work just 2 weeks after my last session of radio therapy

The surgery and radiotherapy has left me with a speech defect I can't say or pronounce certain letters or words and I don't like the sound of my own voice

I was determined I would survive I had places to go things to do and people to see My second marriage was loveless and had long since broken down and soon after the cancer she left and we divorced

my records had been boxed up and locked away in the attic for many years now I was able to bring them out into the light again
Sadly many records over the years had been lost stolen or badly damaged through storage and transportation my collection was minute compared to its former glorious state

An opportunity arose after a discussion and i was invited to play a rocksteady night for Ring the Alarm sound system

Soon after a very good friend of mine Si Freeman the vinyl demon .. a sound engineer, DJ, MC under the name MC Freedom and events photographer also gave me the opportunity to do a reggae night for him

Then the pandemic came along and the events industry all but collapsed During the pandemic

During the lockdown whilst on furlough I acquired some equipment and began playing again just at home

In this last 6 years I’ve met a large number of the most wonderful kindest supportive people
Both in the Skinhead community and in the roots and dub sound system culture
Many of them are DJs many of whom are running their own sound systems and have given me opportunities to play my music

Undergroundroots
Itchy eye-fi
UKPONICS
Ring the alarm To name a few

I have played out at
FTroop presents SKEGGAE REGGAE in Skegness

Throughout 2022 and until it's end in April 2023
I was a resident DJ at Sally Browns in Bradford

I also played out at Dance Craze the Tribute 2023
at the HMV empire Coventry

Many occasions playing a slot at various venues with a soundsystem

And that brings my story to the present day where I’ve been given the opportunity to play my music

The music of my generation
To you across the nation’s
On your number one subculture radio station

www.bootboyradio.net

Hopefully 2024 will be a better year for all and bring many more opportunities where I'll be able to bring my music to you
