Our article of the month comes from Lucy Knollys, who looks at whether the Euros have helped to further 'progressive patriotism'. Following the return of international competition, especially the Euros, people once again began to reexamine what it means to be English and the iconography attached to it. Lucy looks at why being British or English remains taboo for some and how the recent footballing success may have begun a shift towards a new image of patriotism.
July's article of the month is Meera Eldridge 's 'The disproportionate disappearances of Black Brits'. She looks at the systemic issues as to why so many Black Brits - Richard Okorogheye, Blessing Olusegun and Olisa Odukwe to name a few - have gone missing and died in tragic and unknown circumstances. Meera provides a reflection upon the role of the media within these cases, highlighting the role of unconscious biases in an attempt to provide a path forward for rectifying these disproportionate amount of cases. She writes: "mainstream media outlets and the journalism industry are disproportionately white. Statistics show that 94% of journalists are white, while only 0.2% are Black. A 2020 survey revealed that the UK’s 100 major media outlets did not have any non-white top editors. This contributes to unconscious bias in reporting – possibly making journalists more likely to write about missing persons who look like them."
