January 30th marks the 110 death anniversary of Bibi Harnam Kaur. The image was taken on May 19, 2016 when members of The Nameless Collective visited the Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa.

As we learned through records held by the Khalsa Diwan Society, on her deathbed, Bibi Harnam Kaur asked Bhai Bhag Singh to fulfil three acts in her name. First, that every year money for one day of food should be sent to a Sikh Girls College in Ferozepur. Second, money should be sent to an orphanage in Amritsar, and third, 100 rupees should be sent to Peshawar, the place of her birth.

For those interested, Sikh Heritage BC has a scholarship in her name. Link in bio. https://www.sikhheritagebc.ca/scholarships

After years of research and effort, on the 109th anniversary of his ex*****on we are humbled to announce that the letter Bhai Mewa Singh Ji wrote to the community of Stockton has been digitized and is currently being transcribed and re-translated for online public access.

This artifact offers us the only glimpse into Bhai Mewa Singh's own voice, as every other document available is a translation of his words into English, without the corresponding original Punjabi.

We are hopeful to share this with the community in the coming weeks. 🙏🏽

NEW EPISODE ALERT!

The first challenge to Canada’s discriminatory “Continuous Journey” regulation took place on February 14, 1908, less than a month after the regulation was put on the books. Six South Asian passengers onboard the S.S. Aorangi made their voyage to Canada via Fiji but were denied entry because they did not come to Canada via their country of origin. In this episode, Milan, Paneet and Naveen – with special guest Anita Singh – share insight into Fiji and the indentured labour system, and discuss how South Asians from anywhere in the British Empire were restricted from coming to Canada.

January 11th marks the day where Bhai Mewa Singh was executed for assassinating Inspector Hopkinson - but Bhai Mewa Singh wasn't the only one to "shoot" Hopkinson.

No, we're not talking about the assassination attempt on Hopkinson in California by Ghadar activists which he escaped, or the alleged unsuccessful hiring of a white hitman to take him out, we're talking about times Hopkinson was actually shot...on film.

Up until now we've only seen two confirmed images of Hopkinson, and one which we've speculated to be him at Bibi Harnam Kaur's funeral. But recently we came across this image rarely seen photograph from a Vancouver newspaper in 1914 following his assassination. This image confirms what we've all been wondering for a century...Hopkinson did indeed have dimples like AC Slater.
