On 28 January 1958, 67 years ago, LEGO’s 2nd generation owner, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen applies for a patent that would transform the fortunes and trajectory of the humble Danish toy company.

Seen here at the LEGO Idea House, the patent covers a building SYSTEM that involves several interlocking plastic building elements which can be put together in multiple different ways.

The original patent doesn’t just cover the 2x4 brick we know today but also encompassed different brick designs which you can see in red here.
