We are going Belgian again this episode with two very different expressions of Belgian beers. First up is Swedish brewery@barlingbobryggeri and Solberga VIII. This is a Belgian tripel with a light 8% ABV. Light is exactly how we thought of this beer. Then we get a Belgian beer from . Noir de Dottignies is a Belgian strong dark ale. Not a style we see very often. This comes in at 8.5% ABV. This was a real surprise for us. We didn't know what to expect and this really came to play.

It's getting colder now but that doesn't mean we don't want to put away the summer quite yet. We get fruity this episode with two very different types of fruit foward beers. Jungle Boogie is a mixed fermented sour ale aged in oak barrels. It's an aggressive sour ale that reminds us of our favorite flemmish ales. Cherry Red Currant Apricot Vanilla Sour Ale is all those things. Arpus puts out great fruited beers that go more towards the pastry style. It's an intense fruit experience that goes down really smooth.

WOW...when Stefan started this podcast he had no idea it would still be going strong after 9 years. We're celebrating our 9th anniversary this episode. Of course we can't do it alone. We brought the gang together to challenge them with feats of drinking bravado. Martin, Marcus, Björn and Pontus go head to head over five gruelling rounds to see who can identify the correct beer. It is a hard fought battle but there can be only one winner. How do you think you would fare?

Martin went on a little holiday with the partner to Austria. He was able to grab a couple of beers while here was there and bring them back for the show. Gregorius 2024 is an annual release. This is a Belgian quadrupel coming in at a big 10.4% ABV. It's an interesting entry into the style but lacks some of the fun of a true Belgian Quad. Hagger Blend 1019 Blue is part of their ongoing Hagger series. All Hagger beers from are barleywines. Martin and Stefan tried Blend 1019 Pink back in 2020. We quite liked it. It's fun to pick up the second one four years later. It holds up really well and shows no signs of aging. Quite the fun surprise!

We're trying some rebrews this episode. has been putting out interesting Danish beers for years. Double Dippy Doo was last seen in 2020. We both gave it a really good rating. A lot has changed in the beer world since then. This double IPA comes back and kills it once again. Why can't we get this all year around in Sweden? Stigbergets Bryggeri Panta Rei 2024 is a collab beer coming out of the Panta Rei beer festival they attended. Last seen in 2018, collab beers can be a big hit or miss with no one brewery really doing their best work. Stigbergets shows they don't have any problems here by doing what they do best.

It's a geuze episode featuring two breweries never featured on the show before. Martin broke out two beers he is excited to share. These two Belgium breweries are very indemand at the moment. Lazy Red Amber is a blend of 1, 2, and 3 year old lambic blended with Spanish plums. We love plums in lambic and they killed it here. @ Aether Kina is a wild ale aged on cinchona bark for a year and then refermeneted in the bottle with a blackcurrant juice picked from their own garden. Cinchona bark is a natural source of quinine, which means we might not get malaria because we drank a lot of this.

Stefan has some more US beers to share this episode. More importantly, it's from the corner of the US he is from. Texas based has been leading the way on gose variants. From pickle beers to michelada sour beers, they are going to extremes. Salty Lady is the base gose, which is an easy drinking gose. They added chamoy, a salty, sweet, bitter, sour flavor combo, to the beer. The results are something wild. returns to the show with their annual release of BDCS 2023. We featured this beer a couple of years ago and thought it would be fun to check in with the latest version to see how it holds up.

We're expanding our horizons once again with more ciders. Cidre Fermier Du Pays Bray Tradition is a funky, musty cider with loads of funky flavor. This is just how we like it. Domaine Duclos-Fourgeray is a french cidery but they created in the German style of apfelwein. Martin added the perfect companion to the cider with Hanssens Artisanaal Oude Gueuze 2016. Hanssens is a perfect example of a lambic producer that needs to wait to be enjoyed. Not our favorite fresh, give it 5 years and you've got some magic. This doesn't disappoint.

Stefan went on holiday to Portugal and brought back some beers. One from his brother who gifted him several beers from Arkansas. We're excited to try Maibock. It won Gold Medal in 2021 at the Great American Beer Festival. We get it. This beer slaps. It's 7.2% ABV but drinks really light. This is a chuggable beer. is a beer bar in Porto, Portugal. It's a really great place with lots of taps, bottles and cans. They celebrated their 9th year with a special beer brewed by @ . Catraio 9.0 is an India Pale Lager made with oleo saccharum with red grapefruit and lime zests. Then it as hopped with Cascade, Mandarina Bavario and Perle hops and dry-hopped with Nelson Sauvin. Then end result is a hoppy lager with a slightly tart edge.

We don't normally go to the same place in the same year, let alone in the same summer. Something special happened and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to review a beer. has decided to finally release their beers on tap. You know we love 3F beers and getting it by the glass is a huge bonus. somehow got kegs. Might be the first in Sweden. Certainly the first in the region. 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriekenlambik is full of sour cherries which gives it a tart cherry juice flavor. It's incredible. If you missed this and love gueuze, they have Oude Lambic 2019 on tap as well. We follow that up with @ Crimson & Clover 2023. This English barleywine was aged in an apricot brandy barrels. This is incredible and makes you wonder why more beers aren't aged on apricot brandy barrels.

We talked about going to some local dive bars in Malmö for a few years. We just happened to be in the neighborhood and stopped by one of the classic dive bars in Malmö. Gamle Nobes has been around for a long time and my how the times have changed. A few years ago it was the only place in Malmö that had indoor smoking. It was rundown and the patrons gave you a weird look if they didn't know you. Gentrification has come for this landmark location. It's still trapped in a 70's wonderland of design but the taps and the food are worth checking out. We grabbed a couple of beers and took a seat outside. Spaten Premiere Lager is a mass produced German lager but damn if it isn't a quality beer. Smooth, malty and just the right carbonation, it's what you want from a local watering hole. Gamla Nobes Bodega Nobes is brewed just for them by Czech brewery Pivovar Lobkowicz. It's light amber lager with a slight roasted malt finish.

Double saison episode in the middle of summer? Yes please! We love saison beers. They hit even better during the summer. Light, funky and super easy to drink, saison is a perfect summer beer. Anna with Motueka is a farmhouse ale made with wildflower honey and dry-hopped with Motueka. We follow that up with a saison from France. and Brasserie La Malpolon teamed up to create Saison Brett Rhubarabe. Northern France grows lots of rhubarb. Naturally it fits perfectly with a saison. Why aren't there more rhubarb saisons on the market?

Keeping the summer going, we head out to Ramen 2 Birru. Mikkeller's ramen joint makes great ramen. We've been eating here for a few years. There are two locations in Malmö. We are at the Möllanvängstorget location. We didn't try the ramen this time but feasted on beers instead. is an IPA focused Swedish brewery that's been upping the game for a few years. Havoc Apparatus IPA is a 6.5% NEIPA. Sadly they don't mention the hops so mysteries abound. Yield is a companion beer to the APEX IPA. This IPA comes in at 5.5% ABV and is very easy to drink. We saw another beer on the menu that we couldn't pass up. .se Grandmother Gose is a mango, lime and habanero gose. Image a spicy margarita as a beer. It's a spice that builds over time and doesn't completely wreck the palate but comes close.

We're keeping it light and funky this summer and nothing brings out the fun like a cider and a lambic. Österlen 2020 is a dry cider made with apples from Sweden apple Mecca Österlen. It's a great location on Sweden's east coast with some of our best beaches. Dry and fruity, this cider makes us wonder why we don't review more ciders on the show. Metaphore Qvevri is a wild ale from Czech Republic. Qvevri is a ancent Georgian earthenware vessels that were used to make and age wine. Metaphore has taken this practice and used it to age a wild ale. The beer is aged for one year in a qvevri and buried in the ground with loads of Riesling grapes. Then it's aged on oak barrels for another year. With strong mineral notes blended with hints of Reisling, they really did something special here.

We're staying in the neighborhood and visited @ . This is one of Malmö's best sandwich shops. But that's a bit a misnomer. The sandwiches are full meals. Grab and knive and fork because you're going to need to dig in to tackle these monsters. After years of developing a following, they were able to open their own restaurant and get a tap supplied by our friends at . This means they are always going to have some really good To Ol beers on tap. 30 Days Italian Pilsner is an Italian pilsner that only aged 30 days. This is because Italian style pilsners are not aged more than 4-5 weeks creating a lighter, more herbal beer compared to its Czech or Germany counterparts. This will be a killer summer beer. makes their second appearance on the show with Gorilla Juice. This is a collab with . It's a fruited gose with banana, mango, and liquorice candy. You're enjoyment will depend on how much you enjoy banana and liquorice flavors. Fortunately we do.

It's summer and we're on the road. Or at least down the street. We are hitting up several bars and restaruants around Malmö all summer. We kick this off with Mikkeller Moriskan. We reviewed this location a few years ago and it was great. We thought it was time to get out and revisit this summer popup. Is it still a popup bar if it's in the same place very summer for six years? This seasonal bar is a great venue on a warm summer day with lots of beer and food. Verdant Brewing Co - Brewery & Taproom They Went on Forever is a NEIPA made with mosaic, nelson sauvin and galaxy hops. Verdant fumbled for a couple of years but it feels like they are getting back on track with a solid NEIPA. Swedish brewery Bring on the Night is a heavy roasted double stout. This is a solid base stout that brings the chocolate, liquorice and coffee notes you would expect from a heavily roasted stout.

Last episode we said it's time to put away the stouts and barleywines. We may have spoke too soon. This week, we have a double dose of barrel aged beers. Churchill BA Vol. 1 is an imperial stout aged on Wild Turkey barrels. This is straight down the barrel. It does what says on the label and not more than that. Piece of Cake BA #1 is part of their Piece of Cake series. This one is barrel aged and make with spekkoek. Obviously spekkoek is a type of Indonesian layer cake developed during colonial times in the Dutch East Indies. But we're not telling you anything you didn't already know.

Ahhh...summer time is finally here and that means we put away our pastry stouts and barleywines for something light, crisp and easy to drink on a warm day. There have been several posts Instagram and Facebook about how Sweden's best pilsner is Helsinge Pilsener. We wanted to test that against one of our favorite Hapi Pils from @ . Helsinge Pilsener is a solid pilsner and defintely fits the bill. We both enjoyed it. Sweden's best? That's another story. Next up is Hapi Pils. This is a New Zealand pilsner. Where Helsinge Pilsener is tasty, Hapi Pils pops. The hops are bright and refreshing. It's easy to drink and you keep reaching for more. It is Sweden's best pilsner? Who knows, but it's in the running.

Today's a very special episode. It's not often we get to celebrate Sweden National Day on the same day as an episode. But that's not all, it's also Martin's 400th episode. Of course something this special had to have special beers and special friends to join. We called in our beer nerd friends and we get busy celebrating. We have two from The Eighth State Brewing Company . Rouge in Exile is a collab with It's an imperial stout that was aged in bourbon barrels for two years then had dates, caramel, coconut, vanilla and cocoa nibs added. YUM! After that we opened a bottle of We Can Walk. This is a much simpler beer. It's just an imperial stout with ton of toasted coconut. We were in coconut heaven. Congrats to Sweden and congrats to Martin on this special day.

We're keeping it Swedish with a couple of fun new beers. is a new one for us. We got our hands on a bottle of Modern Lager. This IPL comes in at 6% and blends the lager with a slightly hoppy finish. We're looking forward to trying more from Vigrum Bryggeri. is also new to us. We decided on the Modern English, a 5.8% English IPA. While it didn't blow us away, it a good beer. We're always excited to try new breweries and find new local beers to try.

Martin took a little trip to Breda, Netherlands. He was able to collect a few beers while he was there to bring back with him. Breda is a small little down just north of the Belgian boarder and has a suprising number of quality beer bars. The first beer we get to try is from Manskerel Quad Barrel Aged. This barrel aged Belgian quadrupel was aged in rum barrels for 12 months. Sadly, it's really missing the big rum punch we were expecting. Liquid Desserts 30 is a 2 year barrel blend sticky Mexican coffee cake stout with nuts. It's the last in the series for the brewery but not their last beer. It's a shame that this is the last in the series and the only one we got to try.

Sometimes we like to go exploring in Systembolaget. We found a couple of interesting beers to review. has been really working the larger, pils and IPA game really well. Some of their other traditional attempts have been just a little off the mark. Devilish is a Belgian strong golden ale that really nails the style. We were blown away by how good it is. We would put it up against any Belgian brewed version. Next up is something best left on the shelf. PomPom Cider Chokladboll is a pear cider with the flavor of Swedish Chokladboll, chocolate and coconut. Oddly enough, they kind of got it but we're not sure that's a good thing from a cider. It's a wild ride of flavor.

is one of the larger independent breweries in Sweden. They have released some special barrel aged beers. Barrel Aged Barley Wine - Cognac, Rhum and Port is a 13.5% ABV barrel aged monster. It really packs a mouthful of flavor. Rhum Bourbon Rum Stout contains rhum, rum and bourbon. What's the difference between rhum and rum? You'll have to listen to find out. These two beers are too big for the two of us. We had to call in Marcus and Pontus to help.

We got some fun beers to try this episode. has been producing some really good meads for a few years now. They have been releasing single fruit meads have been pretty good. Martin knows how much Stefan loves guava so of course he brought Exclusive - Guava Mead. Not sure guava needs to be made into a mead but here it is. has been releasing variants of Backwoods Bastard. French Toast Bastard is a bourbon barrel-aged scotch ale with maple, cinnamon and vanilla. It's a lot of french toast bourbon goodness.

Getting Swedish again with two really fun local breweries. continues to pump out really good traditional Belgian styles. St Lars 13 is a Belgian quadrupel made to celebratet the 15 anniversary of DeKlomp in Linköping. They are really killing these traditional styles. Angry Moose is an imperial stout that is your basic imperial stout. No extras here, just roasted malty goodness.
