🎥 Hans Vannetelbosch, director of 2022 FILM OF THE YEAR - Beau Monde.

In september 2017 I attained my Masters Degree in Audivisual Arts at the LUCA School of Arts in Brussels.

In the last two years at LUCA, I made three short films which I consider to be my student trilogy based on a variety of social issues. In this trilogy I was also able to discover my own voice and style of filmmaking.

Patient is a shortfilm about the mistreatment of nurses by the very patient they are trying to help. A statement about social hierarchies and the subtle abuses of power that can come with it.

Penitence tells the story of forgiveness, acceptance and the stigmatization of the incarcerated. It puts into question how heavy past actions can weigh in on the rest of one’s entire life.

My final film I made at LUCA was Sons of No One. An allegorical telling of the abuse of power set in a juvenile detention centre where an educator faces of against a mistreating guard. The film had its world premiere at Film Fest Ghent where it won The Public Choice Award of the Student Competition. Later the film went on to being selected at The International Short Film Festival Leuven where it won VAF Wildcard. It got picked up by both Radiator IP Sales for international distribution as well as Dalton for national distribution. Recently the film made it to the finals of the Student Academy Awards. I was very honored to be among the last 8 international students in this category.

“With BEAU MONDE I wish to tell an allegorical story set during an evening in a restaurant that caters to the rich. A story that lays bare the ugly and painful side of this growing divide between rich upper class, represented here by the guests, and the lower income class, represented by the restaurant’s staff. In one evening I want to show how the staff works and toils to satisfy and please their rich guests all the while having to swallow their disregard. During this evening we will follow the lives of many different characters and how their stories intertwine.

The focus here will be on creating two different worlds. One of the rich in the dining area where everything is calm and nice, or at least on the surface. While the other in the kitchen is hectic and sometimes harsh. Though you would expect the climax of the story would be the two worlds colliding, I do not believe that this a good representation of the world we live in today. What is more realistic to me is to show how the staff copes with the attitude of the rich while simply trotting on working and trying the make the best of the lot they’ve been given. The rich guests on the other hand, having become so successful, posses in my view of the world a certain trade, a certain ruthlessness that is often required to achieve such success. A world of sharks ready to devour anything, even themselves, as soon as they smell blood. “ - Hans Vannetelbosch

Cam așa s-a văzut și simțit ultima ediție Bucharest ShortCut Cinefest. Maratonul scurtmetrajelor de noiembrie a fost, din nou, cu multe energii frumoase.
Am avut-o alături de noi pe Marta Lillioja, tânăra regizoare a filmului Jezebel, care ne-a inspirat și ne-a purtat prin călătoria ei în lumea filmului.

Mulțumim I-auzi una pentru găzduire și Kayaprint.ro pentru ninja designs, as always 🙂
