The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is contemplating mandatory registration for all types of electronic bikes (e-bikes) due to a surge in accidents, with 556 incidents reported by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority from January to November last year. Currently, e-bike drivers are not required to have a license, and registration is only necessary if the speed exceeds 25 kilometers per hour. However, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza is proposing universal registration irrespective of speed, aiming to address safety concerns. E-bikes, popular among commuters and delivery riders for their cost-effectiveness, are now under scrutiny for regulatory measures.
