Galerie Met x Berlin Slowtour x SCAA
About the book ‘Fassadendämmerung: Berliner Jugendstil‘
With Jugendstil (Art Nouveau), a new architectural style broke the ground in Berlin at the beginning of the new 20th century. Prussian historicism gives way to a new aesthetic: facades adorned with colored plant ornamentation, rounded bays, and mythical faces emerge in the cityscape. For a brief period, the facades flourish before many of them vanish due to war and de-stuccoing. Explore more than 70 preserved buildings that are typical of Berlin’s Art Nouveau. The book is complemented by two walks inviting you on a journey into an era Julius Meier-Graefe referred to as the “dawn of modernity.”
About the author Heike Johenning
Born in 1968, she studied Slavic and Romance languages in Munich, Paris, and Moscow, completing her degree at the Languages and Interpreting Institute in Munich. Since 1996, she has worked freelance as an author and translator. She has written numerous travel and architecture guides (about St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Tbilisi, Baku). Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) is the focal point in all her books.
