Original Clique: Now Hear Me Now
Label: Chill - TUV 2
Format: Vinyl, 12", 45 RPM, EP
Country: UK
Released: 1990
Genre: Electronic
Style: House, Techno, Bleep
Original Clique made their debut in the early summer of 1990 with the release of two EPs, "Ten To Midnight" and "North of Watford," both launched simultaneously on Chill Records without much fanfare. Their music stood out for its stylistic diversity, unified by a raw, bass-heavy sound that mirrored the minimalist, bleep-centric Techno emerging from Northern England.
Among the standout tracks, "Come To Papa" became a quintessential late-night anthem, characterized by its "Testone" style bleeps, potent bass, and a catchy vocal loop—a feature also prominent in "North of Watford's" lead track, "Now Hear Me Now." This authentic "northern" sound led to a widespread misconception among DJs and notable figures like John Peel, who mistakenly identified Original Clique as hailing from Yorkshire, when in fact they were Luton natives.
Both EPs are now recognized as seminal contributions to the Bleep-influenced genre, representing some of the finest examples of this sound to emerge.
Included in Notes From Underground are U = Underground, Now Hear Me Now and "F" (Whistle Mix)!
