Unfortunately we’ve all had infectious diseases on our minds for the better part of two years 🦠 At the very start of the pandemic, we made this two minute video on predicting the spread of a new infectious disease using mathematics. Although some things have changed since March 2020, the maths still holds 📊

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Action is needed to level the playing field 💪

Let’s celebrate women’s achievements today and every day. Happy International Women’s Day!

What is STEM? 👩🏼🔬
.
.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
.
.
Why do we care about STEM? 🤷🏼♀️
.
.
With technology constantly advancing and expanding and the proliferation of scientific and engineering breakthroughs, it is extremely important and relevant to educate and prepare today’s youth for jobs in STEM subjects.
.
.
STEM is the future of our economy, teaches critical thinking and problem solving, and calls for excellent project management skills.
.
.
Mathematigals aims to increase the representation of women in STEM subjects so that more girls will consider career paths in this exciting and innovative domain 💪

Happy New Year! 🎉🥳 hands up who’s finding it difficult to get back into work after some time off 🙋🏼♀️
.
.
Here’s three tips to help kick start a productive year 💪
.
.
1. Make a plan 📝 sometimes it helps to brainstorm what you hope to achieve this week or month and write down a plan to keep you on track.
.
.
2. Do easy tasks first ✅ tick those easy (and sometimes mundane) tasks off your to-do list first, such as replying to emails, before launching into something that requires more brain power. This can help get you into the correct headspace to tackle bigger tasks.
.
.
3. Take breaks 💆🏼♀️ don’t expect to be able to go full throttle from your first day back. Give yourself time to ease back into your working schedule and make time for the things you enjoy.

If you’ve never used an abacus before, this week’s #1minutemaths is a little introduction 🧮
.
.
Although the abacus is an ancient counting tool (about 5,000 years old!), it’s still used as a calculator today, particularly by those who are visually impaired.
.
.
The abacus can be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as more complex calculations like cube roots! 🤯 Would you be interested in more abacus videos?
