We are saddened to share the passing of international bossa nova star, Sergio Mendes, at the age of 83. An inspiration to Putumayo World Music founder, Dan Storper, Mendes’ band Brasil ‘66 redefined Brazilian popular music with his hybrid of bossa nova, jazz and American pop music. The groundbreaking band reached the top of the U.S. record charts several times in the 1960s. Over the decades, Mendes’ career continued to grow. He won a Grammy in 1992 and an Oscar in 2012 and recorded with the Black Eyed Peas, Stevie Wonder and Justin Timberlake among other popular music stars. He will be remembered for his unique contributions to the world of music.

We are saddened to share the passing of Algerian composer and pianist, Maurice El Medioni. Born in 1928 in the Jewish quarter of Oran, Alergia, El Medioni was a tailor by trade and initially played music as a hobby. After performing with Algerian greats such as Line Monty and Lili Boniche, he moved to France to open a clothing factory. There he began playing solo and with Arabic, Jewish and French artists such as Mahmoud Fadl, the Klezmatics and many he’d peformed with in Algeria 50 years earlier. In his later life, El Medioni divided his time between Israel and France. In 2007, he won the BBC World Music Award for his unique composition style - a mix of Andalusian Jewish music, Arabic raï, a folk music central to his home-city of Oran with western boogie and Latin styles. Maurice El Medioni will be remembered for his passion for and influence on Algerian music.
