“We have to create the punk rock in hip hop again! Punk rock had guts. Hip hop had guts.” These are words from the legendary Darryl McDaniels, the D.M.C. of RUN-DMC at Park City Song Summit last weekend. He called on the younger generation of rappers to speak the truth. “Negativity is a false sense of power,” he said. McDaniels also pointed out that rappers have changed the world at ages 12 to 21. Run-DMC was the first hip hop group featured on MTV. They were inspired by, quoting some of his role models Marvin Gaye to say “What’s Going On?” and Neil Young’s “Ohio.” He said, “You’ve got to have guts to tell the truth.” 🎤✨ Photo by courtesy of

Author’s notes: Run-DMC “You Be Illin’” was my first vinyl record purchase. I was in 6th grade. (Deann Armes)

Don’t miss Park City Song Summit next year. A world of inspiration, camaraderie, and amazing music for three days in the mountains. ⛰️ 🎶

“I’m bringing joy, happiness, and inspiration from the Windy City!” said Mavis Staples returning to kick off Park City Song Summit this year, an intimate, unforgettable sold out performance for some lucky ticket holders to the private show. In 2022, she said in an interview at the song summit that she never sings a word she doesn’t mean. That sentiment hit home when she sang a tender rendition of “Friendship,” on Thursday night, she said was “Pops Staples last work.” ✨📷 Mavis Staples, Park City Song Summit, Thursday Aug. 15, 2024 by courtesy of

Nathaniel Rateliff, in a lab session at Park City Song Summit today, said in response to an audience comment about the difference he’s making in the world through his music: “If I don’t have kids because I’m doing this, then I hope your kids are blessed.” The sincerity and profound relevance in those words struck a chord.

Park City Song Summit, with its focus on mental health and intimate conversations (Summit Labs) brings out a vulnerability in the artists that elevates the performances beyond entertainment to spiritual inspiration and gratitude for the music that unites us.
