Ten years after the events in The Poet and years of writing crime for the LA Times, Jack McEvoy is determined to go out with a bang. Just like the first Jack McEvoy novel, The Scarecrow is page-turning and creepy and tackles some challenging topics along the way to figuring out who has committed the long list of murders and clearing the name of an innocent party.

In Donโ€™t Tell Meg, you get a front-row seat to Pete Bailey screwing up his life, and in true thriller fashion, things go from bad to worse. At times, I was almost screaming at the page, and I was so angry with Pete that I put the book down for a bit. Yes, that sounds overdramatic, but itโ€™s a true depiction of my reading experience.

The characters feel very real and pull you through the twists and turns in the story. I canโ€™t wait to read the next book in the trilogy, mainly because Iโ€™m getting the impression that Pete hasnโ€™t learned anything from the first book after reading the first chapter of the next book.

I loved A Tale of Two Cities, but the audiobook narration drove me spare and did detract from the story. But the story was an interesting read, especially if youโ€™re interested in this period and the French Revolution. A part of me wishes I shopped around for a better audiobook narration.

I do, however, have an issue with the way Dickens protrays women in his books, but itโ€™s a classic and is a depiction of the period.

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ/5

I would have given this book four stars, but I hated the audiobook so much that I gave it three stars. In retrospect, it seems like a harsh rating, but I don't want to go back and change it because it was how I felt at the time.

In Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman transported me to the world of London Below, which occupies the underground infrastructures. From the very first sentence, I was hooked and fully immersed in this magical world. Perhaps it was the truly fascinating Alice In Wonderland retelling or the fact that Neil himself narrated the audiobook, but upon reaching the end; I desperately searched for another re-entry point into the world of London Below.

A Killing in Costumes is the second LGBTQ+-friendly cozy mystery that Iโ€™ve read, and Iโ€™m guessing that it was recommended to me after I finished reading The Devilโ€™s Chew Toy by Rob Osler. At present, it's unclear whether the story will be a part of a series, but fingers crossed. Set in Palm Springs, the book is witty, clever, adorable, and a little reminiscent of Murder She Wroteโ€”Iโ€™m not sure why this comes to mind, but it just does.

If youโ€™re looking for an LGBTQ+-friendly cozy mystery, then youโ€™ll love this book. Although, as a straight woman in her early 40s, I enjoyed the platonic relationship of the main characters and the interesting world the author created, and Iโ€™m sure you will, too.

Duplicity, the second book in the James Lalonde Mystery Series, is available now in ebook and paperback at your favourite online bookstore. Links below. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

A Murdered Professor. A Priceless Manuscript Stolen. A Journalist Caught in the Crossfire.

This was not the reunion James envisioned.

His friends are squabbling and keeping secrets. At the centre of the drama is a medieval manuscript.

Moments after James discovers a secret code on the pages of the manuscript, a hooded figure murders a professor and steals the manuscript from Oxford University.

While James is receiving medical attention, he discovers a secret about his past that he was never supposed to know.

Instead of staying on bed rest, James decides to leave town and uncover the truth. But DI Alice Oโ€™Donnell puts a hold on his passport, believing James organised the murder and theft. Before he leaves for New York, James must investigate the truth behind the lab break-in.

As his investigation digs deeper, James discovers everyone has means, motive, opportunity and something to hide.

With an endless list of possible suspects, James must clear his name, find the manuscript, and identify the murderer before they strike again.

Duplicity is the second novel in A D Hayโ€™s gripping amateur sleuth mystery series. If you like cloak and dagger mysteries filled with twists and turns, youโ€™ll love this instalment from the series.

๐Ÿšจ New Podcast Episode ๐Ÿšจ

In this episode, I want to share with you a publishing update and let you know about all the books that I've published since my last behind-the-scenes writing vlog. After this, I share the book description and a little about the series of my murder mystery novella, The Candidate. Next, I read the prologue, chapters one and two.

Amelia D. Hay Iโ€™m Amelia. I write mystery and thriller novels under the pen name A. D. Hay and Iโ€™m the author of Missing the first book in the James Lalonde series. Once again, Patterson slips into the mind of two creepy psychopaths in Kiss the Girls. Its short chapters and intriguing plot create a thrilling page-turner. In Kiss the Girls, Alex Cross investigates a series of murders by two serial killers. One goes by the name Casanova and the second, The Gentleman Caller. Both serial killers abduct, torture and kill women who are seemingly perfect in every way.

But the story wasn't perfect. One of the surviving victims, Kate falls for Alex Cross a week after being r@ and torturedโ€”this character decision feels unbelievable considering what the woman has endured.

Despite this plot line, I highly recommend reading Kiss the Girls, but be warned, the story contains a lot of violence against women, and you may need to read Along Came a Spider first because the events in that novel are referenced in the story.

Christmas Co**se is a cute, light hearted read that will require you to suspend disbelief. I don't mean that in a passive aggressive wayโ€”it is however, a hallmark of the cozy mystery genre. In this book the reader is whisked away to Candy Cane Hollow where Mrs Claus is accused of murdering the local GP's receptionist. Her weapon of choice? A minced pie.

Holly who was recently rescued by Mrs Claus after her car broke down along a highway during a snow-storm, believes that Mrs Claus wouldn't do such a thing and sets out to prove her innocence.

Murder Offstage is exactly what you'd expect. It s the perfect combination of Agatha Christie meets Downton Abbey. Set in the early 1920's, amateur sleuth Rosie Parker decides to uncover the truth behind a murder and clear her friends name. And in the process locate a missing family heirloom. Murder Offstage manages to remain lighthearted despite the bodies piling up. As usual, I purchased both the eBook and Audiobook, and enjoyed the voice performance of Clare Wille. Her performance brought the cast of already interesting characters to life.

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ/5

Death of a Screenwriter is a humorous, intricately-plotted mystery village mystery and is the first book in the Hamish Macbeth series I've read. Its highly complex plot had me turning the pages.

Initially, I decided to read the book in French while listening to the audiobook in English, but it didn't work out so well, so I ended up listening. But the French cover was too cute to not buy from a FNAC during a recent-ish trip to Paris.

Here's a bit about the book.

Set in the quirky village of Lochdubh, where Hamish Macbeth resides. Patricia Martyn-Broyd is a mystery writer whose better days are behind her. But, things seem to be turning around for her when one of her out-of-print novels is commissioned for TV. However, her joy is short-lived after discovering that her book is turned into an overly sexualised TV show that has dramatically deviated from its original source. When the screenwriter turns up dead, the blame shifts to Martyn-Broyd. Desperate to clear her name of any wrongdoing, she turns to Hamish Macbeth to solve the case.

Poison at the Village Show by Catherine Coles is a post-war cozy mystery that reminds me of a modern take on Miss Marple but with a younger protagonist.

Hereโ€™s a bit about the book.

Martha is a woman caught between worlds. On one side is a village full of gossipโ€™s, and on the other is her unique situation thanks to her husband running off sometime before; she is neither a wife nor a widow. But Martha has her sister Ruby and her faithful dog, Lizzie, by her side. As she struggles to make ends meet, the murders begin. With the help of the new hot vicar, Martha sets out to solve the first murder. But the bodies pile up.

Can Martha prove her innocence and find the real culprit.

Rest in Pieces and Blown to Pieces by Kate Grayowski were both fast-paced and full of suspense and wit. After reading book three, I was eager to go back and read the first two books. Another creepy and intriguing page-turner. After finishing this book, I was tempted to delve into numerous documentaries on the Cabinets of Curiosities, but I resisted. Child and Preston eloquently take you back in time to the time period of the Cabinets of Curiosities and the questionable individuals who run them. This book is packed with twists and turns, suspense, gore, and diabolical villains.

I must admit, after reading the previous two books in the series, I've become a fan of Nina Wilde, not so much Eddie, because he's the stereotypical action-adventure character. And he's a bit whiny, especially in this book. Nina and the association with Arthurian legend is the reason I picked up this book. Like the other books in the series, you need to suspend disbelief because it is unbelievable at times, especially when they start discussing harnessing earth energy for dubious means. If you like action-packed books with a dose of mythology, then you'll love this instalment in the wild/chase series.

In October Man, we see the world of Magical Policing is not limited to London. One of the interesting things about the book is discovering more about the history and scope of Aaronovitch's magical enforcement universe. To avoid rehashing the book description or spoiling the plot, I will say that the story follows Tobias Winter, who investigates an unusual death. He aims to get in and out, solve the crime then move. That's his policing dream. But, naturally, obstacles get in the way. Even though the story doesn't feature the loveable Peter Grant, it's still a great read.
