First field test on how the fishing rod from natural materials work.🎣 Didn’t have time for bait or actually fishing, so I just tested it with a stone instead. Super easy to operate, works almost as great for casting out the line & bait as the ones you can buy. The eyes made with pine roots made no friction to the line at all. No tangled line either, runs very smoothly. Very pleased with that, it’ll be a great addition to my tarp canoe once the weather is a bit warmer. Spinning/reeling in is a slow thing with this on. Noisy too, wood on wood always makes a lot of friction. If I verse to make an even more simple take on the wheel, I think I’d leave out the little handle on the spool. The line is easier and faster to reel in by hand, then the small handle is more an obstacle than help. All in all, right now just very happy it worked as I had hoped for. A fun crafting project - and even more fun using. Can’t wait to try to get a fish on this one. 🐟💭😉 #fishing #bushcraft #homemadefishinggear #fieldtest #woodsman
Finally finished my snowshoes. ❄️✔️ Can’t wait for a chance to test them out on an outing in snowy conditions. Both snowshoes have been given 5 layers of linseed oil by now, that not only goes deep into the wood frame to protect it, but also into the tight rawhide weaving to waterproof it. The linseed oil I’ve applied has a hardening effect as an ingredient as well which means the rawhide tightens even further. The rawhide net is held onto the frame in the front and back part through some tiny holes. The net in the middle can’t slide either, because I carved out some notches as ‘barbs’ or grip on the backside. Don’t know how much effect these will have, but I’ve previously experienced with other primitive snowshoes I’ve made that they sometimes slide a bit backwards in a step, which can be extremely frustrating or hard through long walks in the snow. It’s where the most of my weight is on the frames, so I gave it a try. At the same time it protects the rawhide lashings a bit instead of them being the only ‘grip’ into a slippery slope. There’s still enough thickness in the frame where I made the notches so they won’t break there. It’s been fun diving into a project like this that took a lot more time to finish than most other things I craft. I especially enjoyed the process of steam bending the snowshoe frames. Gained a lot of knowledge through this project, what it’s all about for me. Now… Someone… Send snow!!! ❄️☃️🌨 #outdoorlife #crafting #bushcraftgear #wintergear #traditionalsnowshoes
Crafted myself a beautiful nap in the woods… 💤🌲🎶 With everything else around me going either too fast or too much on edge - it was a blessing to find this place. Abundance of birdsong from above through the fir woodland, and all I had to do was take off my rucksack and lie down in the cool green soft mossy forest floor… A complete reboot for the whole system. 🌲🙏🏼 - Nature provide so much, if you only let it.💚 #woodsman #natureprovides #greenforest #peacefull #mindfulness

A few more impressions from walks in the Umbrian National parks. Spring in Italy. All kinds of weather every 5 minutes in the mountains. Green, wet, muddy, beautiful views, distinct smells from herbs, abundance of animals and their tracks, strong rivers, some possible to cross - some weren’t. Luckily I had made a good thorough map-study from home, Hoping to find a good map upon arrival, however that part didn’t work out. I didn’t have a map, or anything online on my phone. Instead I had to find all the paths to walk with the group, navigating with a sense of how the mountains were situated around the rivers, a compass and common sense of direction, ups and downs. Great experience to be in such a huge forest area, with very little things to aid me but still with a strong feeling that what I had was enough. A deep feeling of freedom 🌿 After a lot of detours in rain, heavy wind, snow and hail I ended up with some usable hiking routes - walked them again with the group in much nicer weather. ☀️ #hiking #naturelover #thegreatoutdoors #italylandscape #springtime #naturalnavigation #umbria #animaltracks #pathfinder #guide
Debris shelter. Came across a lot of thick bark from a downed larch tree. Cut up the bark into pieces that I could use as roof tiles for the shelter. Made a quick frame for the shelter and began adding holes into each little piece with the tip of my knife in order to tie them to the structure. (Tried just to place them, they just slipped off.) Some 3 hours later I had myself a decent roof for the night. Added a layer of leaves on top of the bark. Not exactly pretty - but definitely a usable method if you don’t have a tent or tarp with you outdoors. Great to create a shade - and it’ll probably be a little better than being exposed directly to rain - but not waterproof. I tried to place every second tile on top of the ones on each side, and started from the bottom and worked my way up, however the curved uneven shapes of the bark pieces didn’t make it easy. Good learning experience nevertheless. A good meal, coffee, campfire and now dozing off to sleep soon. The simple life treated me well today. 🪓🔥🌱 #bushcraft #debrisshelter #survival #keepitsimple #primitiveshelter #campvibes #outdoorsskills #naturalresources #survivalskills #campfire #playlife
Made two tiny unicorn horn pendants for my daughters. It’s not always about big manly axe splittings - sometimes it takes tiny cuts and a bit of fire to create a little magic… 🧚🏻✨ #carving #carvingwood #unicorn #woodpendant #lovemydaughters #organicjewelry #thelittlethings #bushcraft #ideasforkids #simplelife
🛶 Picked up my Tarp-canoe at the secret location in the woods by the lake where it’s been all winter. I immediately noticed that the mice hadn’t been too friendly with it - a great deal of the jute twine had been chewed thoroughly, (mildly put…) The tarp wrapping up the frame had a good long chew hole too, but luckily just near the railing, did a minor emergency fix of that. The paddle had seen better days as well… Managed to paddle about 1 km to where I had parked. The paddle almost gave up completely halfway - but I was able to make it back to land safely without getting too wet…💦 Improvised and quick roof mount for the canoe on my car with two poles and some cordage. (Not recommended if you have to drive long distances… I had 2 km of tiny non trafficked roads.) Had to strip the canoe completely from the torn tarpaulin. The frame itself was luckily still in a very good condition. Still tight lashings. Just a few tiny places it needs some repair work. Going to put a new coat onto it at home - then it should be ready for new adventures.👍🏼🌱 People here in the neighborhood probably think I’m an oddball 😆 (Honestly couldn’t care less if they did) A few of them stopped and stared wide-eyed as I drove by with the large stick construction tied to the roof… Haha… Wouldn’t know how to start explaining anyways. I do mine - you do yours… I’ll grab a quick coffee now and then sew a new cheap tarpaulin onto the frame, the sooner the better; Want to go fishing, camping and exploring soon! 🎣🛶🏕

Finally home in the woods again 🌲🌱 Got a crazy idea for a multipurpose thing to bring with me outdoors a while back… After a long good chat with the craftsman Scott thornhill_ultraheavy about the idea he kindly offered to make me a prototype of it. Heavy duty quality and strength but still relatively light. Waxed canvas and leather loops - really really well made Scott, I’m super impressed with every single detail!!! Got it a few weeks ago but didn’t have the time to play with it until now. Tonight I’m going to sleep in it and see how that goes 👍🏼💤 I’ll write more about this later and show the other ways to use it as well. But right now I’m just going to enjoy the night out here. Goodnight 🌙🌲🌲🌲 #bushcraft #woodsman #multipurpose #waxedcanvas #outdoors #intothewoods #hiking #coffeeinthewoods #camping
I need an adult… Seriously… I get sucked into far too many things I love doing, often without the ability to stop before I run out of bandages, blood or resources … Who left me unsupervised with all these rocks anyways???!? 😆💭 Haha… Made a caveman fidget spinner out of flint, maybe that’ll occupy my hands for a while… doubt it… On a serious note, I’m starting to get a much better feeling an grip about how the material behaves. That feels good. The various blades and tips on my ground sheath was the result of a few hours with flint tonight. #primitiveskills #hyperactive #craftdriven #woodsman #needanadult #donttakelifetooseriously #itsjustrocks #playlife #blades
I’ve just finished 46 rounds around the sun today. Had a wonderful day getting celebrated by my closest family. I also had a little time for myself with my hands on a nice project; A primitive knife with an antler blade from Red deer and a hardwood handle in blood beechwood. Figured the easiest way to make a strong functional blade would be a Yakutian style - easier to sharpen on a flat stone as well. Both materials was pretty easy to work with. Not a blade for woodwork - but it won’t have any problems going through flesh in a survival situation where you have to defend yourself. The antler blade would easily fit a spear as well, the tang goes deep into the handle. I like the way it ended up looking and I loved the process. 🦌🔪🌱🪶 #antlerblade #antlerknife #blade #knife #primitiveknife #selfdefense #selfreliance #primitiveweapon #survivalist #knifeporn #rawblade

That tiny moment just before and after an arrow is let go from the bowstring, time stands still. Mind and body is completely centered in a focus around one single task . I guess that’s the reason why some people use archery as a meditation form… 🙏🏼🏹 And… Practice, practice, practice - that’s a skill in itself. #archery #selfbow #meditation #mindfullness #arrows #woodsman #survivalist #rowanbow #shooting #primitivehunting #focus #aimstraight #aim #timestandstill #practicepracticepractice #primitiveskills #honeyourskills

🪓 I lended out my hatchet to someone I was sure would take good care of it. Sadly it came back to me with an apology and two deep ugly notches in the edge. It happens… Spent some hours carefully grinding them away with a wet stone. They’re completely gone now. This little clip was the last touch up on the cutting edge with the little pocket sharpening device I always keep on me when out. A piece of flat wood: fine grit 800 sandpaper glued to one side + leather and honing compound for stropping the edge on the other. (A very easy DIY thing that’s extremely handy to bring.) I much prefer maintenance of the edges of sharp tools such as knifes or axes in the field as I go, always straightening out the edge before they bend too much. Once the thinnest outer part of your edge is bended just a tiny little bit, and you keep working hard with it, it’s only going to get worse and worse. By maintaining it on the fly instead of just once a month at home, my experience is that I only have to use a coarse stone very rarely, which extends the lifetime of your tools a great deal since a coarse stone grinds off much more material off your precious tools than if you constantly correct the edge with a bit of gentle leather stropping. Anyways; My favorite hatchet is ready to go outdoors again now - and so am I. 👊🏼🌲🌱 #bushcraft #honeyourskills #sharpeningtools #sharpedges #hatchet #axe #axemaintenance #keepitsimple #takecareofyourtools #outdoorslife #woodtools #woodcraft
Carved out a little bullroarer today 🎶🪵🌿 Just a piece of wood cut into shape with my axe and knife, with a hole and a twisted length of leather cordage attached to the end of it in a tiny hole. This ancient sound machine has been used widely all over the world for different ceremonies, rituals or simply to communicate with over long distances. The design of it, shape weight, length and such varies a lot from place to place. (If you are lazy, a simple flat piece of wood on a piece of cordage will make a loud noise as well.) There’s apparently an ongoing discussion about which culture invented it first, but the oldest version of a bullroarer I have hear of dates back to the Paleolithic period in Europe, found in Ukraine from 18,000 BC. A super fun and simple little thing to craft and experiment with. #bullroarer #woodwork #carving #knife #axe #soundmachine #ancientmusic #outdoorinspiration #bushcraftideas #longdistancerelationships
Made an organic foraging net bag by the beach 🌿🌊☀️ Wanted to know how much cordage one would need to make one of these useful bags, so I went with jute twine. 38 meters in total was all it took. Started out with braiding the shoulder straps and the edge of the bag, all in one: Took 6 pieces of 3 meter jute twine. Braided the first meter into one (3x2) the middle part where the edge of the bag would be I braided the jute twine into two separate pieces (3x1 in both) and when I felt the edge was long enough, I braided the rest together as one again (3x2) - The shoulder strap with the edge in the middle is what you see hanging from the tree in the beginning of the reel. It’s hanging from a branch so that it’s easier to work with without getting the cordage tangled too much. Tied 20 lengths of 2 meter jute twine onto the edge of the bag, folding each piece double, using the end loop to make a cow hitch on each piece. 10 on each side, now with 2 pieces of equal length hanging from the edge from each knot. The rest of the process is simply adding overhand knots onto a lengths from two knots beside each other. Preferably in the same lengths so that the mesh will become as uniformly as possible. A lot of overhand knots later I tied off the ends together as the bottom. Tied the shoulder strap together and the bag was ready to go. 👍🏼 A bag like this can be useful for many things outdoors if you are foraging; for collecting mussels to eat at the beach, mushrooms or other things in the woods, carrying tinder that needs to dry on the move, or simply to carry extra gear around. The mesh bag doesn’t take up much space, which is probably why it’s used for carrying groceries all around the world as well. A fun little DIY project in between dips to cool off in the water. #bushcraft #meshbag #organicbag #diybag #foragingbag #survival #netbag #outdoorinspiration #primitiveskills #netmaking
