Question! What is your favorite kind of content that 2ndLook publishes?

Our roundtables? Articles that compare information from left/right perspectives and try to find the underlying things many people on both sides can agree on? Our no-agenda deep dives into systemic topics like corrupt incentives in congress and the media, why the war in Ukraine started, etc?

Is there any other kinds of content you'd like to see 2ndLook publish?

This was a fun and educational AI roundtable! Oriol is a machine learning & AI developer, Hirad is an engineer & entrepreneur, and Jonathan is a multimedia artist and CAD designer. We sat down to discuss the recent developments in AI.

The conversation touches on ways AI could lead to increased or decreased inequality, the potential for totalitarianism, other ethical and societal dilemmas it may pose, and ways the world may change in the future.

It’s meant to be accessible for viewers who are new to the topic of AI, and want to know what all the fuss is about, and hopefully adds some new ideas to the discussion for those who have been following AI development.

Did you know BRICS has overtaken the G7 in its share of the global economy? They currently include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, but in 2022 they started talking about expanding their membership. Mexico is one of the countries that has expressed interest in joining.

We talk about BRICS in our article, "What’s Happened to the US Economy?"

According to the FBI Law Enforcement Officers Killed & Assaulted (LEOKA) report, in 2019, 48 police officers were killed, and of the 49 assailants involved, 15 were black/African American.

This means over 30% of the people who killed police in 2019 were black/African American, making black Americans even more over-represented in killing police than in being killed by them.

We would not have found this information if we hadn't had a police officer peer review our latest article, "Police Killings and Race in the US," and inform us about the LEOKA report. This is why we have our articles peer reviewed by people from different perspectives!

There's always information we missed that people are able to help fill in. Our peer reviewers play an important role in making sure their perspective is represented in its strongest form.

The odds that victims of police killings were fleeing the scene when killed has been increasing each year, and the odds that black Americans were killed while fleeing is 28% higher than for other races.

Did fleeing increase the chances of black Americans getting killed by police or are police more likely to shoot a black person while they are fleeing than someone of another race?

Incomplete data with insufficient context can be very misleading and happens much too often.

That's why we use our peer review process at 2ndLook. It's not perfect, but every single time we realize there were angles or major sources that the author hadn't considered or come across.

We really want to paint a complete picture with all its complexity.

Check out our latest article, "Police Killings and Race in the US" for an example of how this process plays out in practice. Let us know in the comments if we missed anything important.

And remember to sign up as a peer reviewer if you'd like to contribute to the process!

Most people are confused when they hear that 2ndLook includes opinions and information that members of our team don't agree with in our articles.

But here's why: our job is to inform you. We try to give enough context so that you can see many aspects of the topic and make your own decision. We don't try to tell you what to think. We want you to know what's out there, even if we don't agree with it, rather than just one side of the story.

We use our peer review process to find out if we're missing anything, so we can give you as full a picture as possible.

Do you agree that it shouldn't be the job of journalists to exclude information that doesn't fit their narrative? Why or why not?

Officials oblige the media’s need for drama by fabricating crises and stage-managing their responses, thereby enhancing their own prestige and power. Journalists dutifully report those fabrications.

The result is a distortion of the constitutional role of government into an institution that must continually resolve or appear to resolve crises; it functions in “a new and powerful permanent emergency mode of operation.”

The architect of the transformation was not a political leader or a constitutional convention but Joseph Pulitzer, who in 1883 bought the sleepy New York World.

In 20 years he made it the country’s largest newspaper.

Pulitzer accomplished that by bringing drama to news—by turning news articles into stories with a plot, actors in conflict, and colorful details.

In the late 19th century, most newspaper accounts of government actions were in formats that resembled the minutes of a board meeting, and about as interesting. Pulitzer turned them into stories with a sharp dramatic focus.

Pulitzer made stories dramatic by adding blaring headlines, big pictures, and eye-catching graphics. He took events out of their dry, institutional contexts and made them emotional rather than rational, immediate rather than considered, and sensational rather than informative.

Pulitzer’s journalism has become a model for the multistage theater of recent decades.

"Journalists need crises to dramatize news, and government officials need to appear to be responding to crises. Too often, the crises are not really crises but joint fabrications. The two institutions have become so ensnared in a symbiotic web of lies that the news media are unable to tell the public what is true and the government is unable to govern effectively."

Can you believe this was written in 1995?? Do you remember any of the examples they talk about? What are some more recent examples of the media and government doing this? Let us know in the comments.

With the US national debt nearing $31.5 trillion dollars, some are concerned that the current economic model is unsustainable. However, adherents of Modern Monetary Theory make the distinction that this is public, rather than private debt, so it can be repaid by issuing more currency. In other words, the US exports dollars and imports goods.

What do you think about the national debt? Is it a problem or just a ledger of record?

As one year comes to a close, and another begins, we reflect on all that’s happened with gratitude.

In 2022 we published articles covering major current events like the Canadian Trucker Convoy and leaked court opinion that foreshadowed the overturning of Roe v Wade. We covered the Russian invasion of Ukraine by tying in history from the Russian and Ukrainian perspectives. We covered important topics that aren’t being discussed enough, like planned obsolescence and the right to repair. And after the US hit the highest inflation in 40 years, we dug into what’s going on with the economy. We explored how much price gouging may or may not have impacted inflation, and did a deep dive into how the economy works and various contributors to the 2022 inflation.

We have some exciting things in the works for January and look forward to the year ahead!

Stay tuned, 2ndLookers.

This graph comparing the GDP growth to the national debt suggests that the US economy has been sustained by debt for many years—though Modern Monetary Theory makes the distinction that this is public, rather than private debt, so it can be repaid by issuing more currency. As one article puts it, “without debt, there is little to no organic economic growth [in the US economy].”

A very basic formula put forth by famed economist Milton Friedman states that “Inflation is caused by too much money chasing after too few goods.” In other words, when you don't have enough goods for people to buy but you have a lot of money circulating, the price of things goes up.

We know for a fact that the Fed began providing billions in repo loans for Wall Street in late 2019 and that the US money supply increased by 33% in 2020. We also know that a good deal of production, shipping, and selling of goods and services was shut down at that same time, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. We know that the availability of natural gas has been disrupted. According to Friedman's model, the increase in money supply and decrease in goods are classic factors that could contribute to inflation.

🗞NEW RELEASE: What's Happened to the US Economy?

With inflation reaching the highest rate in 40 years and a recession looming, this deep dive digs into what's happened to the US economy.

It covers:

♢ The massive increase to the US dollar money supply, starting in late 2019

♢ The role of Federal Reserve interest rates

♢ The decrease in goods and services caused by Covid-19 shutdowns and just-in-time supply chain models

♢ Why gas prices have such a huge impact on the economy at large

♢ The impact of price gouging and windfall profits by corporations, if any

♢ The likely impacts of efforts to fight inflation, such as raising interest rates and the Inflation Reduction Act

♢ How the US economy is sustained by national debt rather than economic growth and whether it’s a problem or not

♢ How the US exports its inflation to the rest of the world

Arizona Senator, Kyrsten Sinema leaves Democratic Party to become an Independent, causing a stir as control of the Senate was split 50-50, with Democrats maintaining the upper hand due to VP Kamala Harris’ tie breaker vote.

In practice, Sinema has already been acting like an independent, voting against Democratic motions at times. It seems likely she will continue to vote with the Democrats when she agrees with the motion.
