What's inside?

In this edition we feature the not-to-be-missed Brett Whiteley: Inside the Studio at John Curtin Gallery, part of a four state tour of Australia by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. It was Wendy Whiteley who spearheaded the idea of opening the artist’s home and studio as a public museum after the artist’s untimely death in 1992, and since 1995 the Art Gallery of NSW has managed the space. Upgrades to the building and conservation issues have meant its closure until late 2025, but provided a rare opportunity for works to tour.
More than 30 years after his death, Whiteley’s works still resonate with energy and playfulness in an exhibition of works rarely, if ever seen in Western Australia.

Laetitia Wilson reviews the double solo exhibitions at Holmes à Court Gallery, Diasporae by Stuart Elliott and The Human Condition by Richard Weller, revealing fascinating threads between the two shows.

At the Art Gallery of WA we chatted with ceramicist Sandra Black and AGWA Associate Curator Isobel Wise about Black’s major survey, Sandra Black: Holding Light, a fitting exhibition of her practice spanning 50 years.

Sam Beard reviews the John Stringer Prize 10 Year Retrospective at John Curtin Gallery, providing an insight into new works created by past winners.

We cover Once upon a sometimes by Stormie Mills at FORM Gallery, and explore the life and work of Mills from graffiti artist to gallery artist.

We delve into Swan River Print Studio’s annual exhibition challenging members to stretch their practice, and Wise Young Things by Asha Cornelia Cluer, a unique film project matching young students with senior citizens.

These were taken in parallel to a daily making practice that employs ground imagery in an attempt to record small unrepeatable moments.
