In this edition we feature Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery and Theo Constantino, its director appointed to the role in April last year. It’s a welcome reversal of fortunes for the University of WA gallery, which has been director-less for the past four years after UWA cut the position citing poor financial management by the university combined with the effects of the pandemic.

It’s an exciting new era at LWAG as Constantino gradually puts her own stamp on the gallery and is already exploring interesting ways to provide new art conversations for audiences.

Laetitia Wilson reviews Drylands at Holmes à Court Gallery as part of Perth Festival, where a group of eight artists were selected for their connection to regions to communicate environmental threats.

We cover Franco-Hatian photographer Henry Roy’s world-first survey at the Art Gallery of WA, Impossible Island, an ode to his observations over decades, including his exile from his birth country of Haiti.

Sam Beard reviews Desperate Measures and Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams, both at Fremantle Art Centre, finding an eclectic treat for the senses and the mind.

Jess van Heerden visited WA Museum Boola Bardip to review The Great Kimberley Wilderness virtual reality experience and Spinifex People: Art and Stories from Pila Nguru, noting they are breathtaking and inspirational respectively.

Lastly, we spoke with Patrick Foret from Cultural Enterprise about his concept to make Western Australian arts shine internationally. You can read an extensive Q&A with Patrick Foret at artistschronicle.com

Flight of the Battery Hens, 17 - 31 January, PS Art Space.

At just 26, Melissa Clements has been a finalist for some of Australia’s most prestigious art prizes, including the Archibald. In this solo exhibition she explores freedom, resilience, and the human spirit’s unyielding drive for transcendence.

The culmination of a residency at PS Art Space, Flight of the Battery Hens is a reflection of Clements's connection to the Fremantle community, her expededitions to the Arctic and her ancestral bond to the English countryside as avenues to explore the complexities of the human condition.

Download Artoble at App stores and hear the latest podcast: Lyn DiCiero speaks to Richard Seale ahead of his exhibition Little Gems. The exhibition is a photographic journey of Garden Island, now home to the Royal Australian Navy, but once a shack community of 150 or so hand-built timber, iron and asbestos shacks where Seale and his family holidayed for 13 years. A utopian destination of off-grid living with a profound effect on the psyche of the artist, the immersive exhibition recalls carefree living with little parental control, as Seale counts himself among the last generation of free-range children.

Little Gems, Richard Seale's first exhibition, is on show at Rockingham Arts Centre from 11 – 26 January, 2025.

Rockingham Arts Centre (RAC) was refurbished in January 2022. The refurbishments upgraded the interior to strengthen the flexibility and function of the venue for users. Key improvements to the venue were a new hanging system, upgraded lighting in the gallery, refurbished and repainted internal walls without visual distractions, dedicated storage spaces throughout, and a wash-out sink suitable for a variety of art mediums. A shade sail was also been installed in the courtyard. Two large swinging walls and ceiling mounts were also installed in mid-September 2022 to finalise the upgrades.

The venue consists of a: B category boutique gallery space, multi-use room for art workshops, smaller and overflow exhibitions, and pop up artisan shops.
There is also a studio space which can accommodate one to two artists for short-term hire and artist in residency opportunities.

Housed in the heritage listed, turn of the century Town Hall building, the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery opened in 1984 as Western Australia's first regional A-Class venue. The Gallery is the City of Greater Geraldton's principal arts institution, serving arts and culture to the Midwest region's residents and tourists. GRAG also houses the City of Greater Geraldton's Art Collection.

GRAG is proud to present a diverse and stimulating exhibition program from local, state, national and international sources. Not only does GRAG host touring exhibitions curated by the nation's leading Art Galleries, special exhibitions are curated in house with the State's best and brightest artists being selected to reflect local themes.

The Gallery's flagship exhibition, the Mid West Art Prize occurs biennially and is open to all artists practicing throughout the State. Established in 2011, the Mid West Art Prize continues to be a staple in the Western Australia's Art Prize calendar.

Rene was born c 1950 at Warlu, a rock hole west of Irrunytju, near Papulankutja (Blackstone) in Western Australia. As a young child Rene lived a semi nomadic lifestyle in the desert. "When I was little I walked in the bush with my mother and father from rock hole to rock hole. If a little rock hole got dry we would travel to one of the main rock holes which always had water.” Rene walked with her family to Warburton Mission and then on to Areyonga mission in the Northern Territory where she went to school. Years later the family walked to Papulankutja and then on to Irrunytju community where Rene married and raised her five children and five grandchildren.

Irrunytju (Wingellina) is where Rene currently resides.
