Outward Films A creative partnership between filmmakers Oliver Semple & Miles Watts, creators of films & web series

14/02/2024

When writing a screenplay the general rule is one page per minute, but one thing that isn't always clear is that sometimes you have to dictate that pace by adding more or less description. At the moment we are working on an 80-90 page all out action horror and the pace of the writing in the script moves from tense to frenetic - each time the writing style has to change and reflect that. I personally have found this script a huge learning curve as I'm more accustomed to writing balanced or even dialogue heavy scripts. Another note of interest was that I found myself in a position this weekend where I had all the elements of the story but couldn't move forward with the plot, bearing in mind we already have a well charted structure for this screenplay. Over the weekend I felt irritable, I wasn't trying to write but any human interaction made me feel almost interrupted, like I was in a low level state of concentration constantly. On Monday morning I was in the shower, not thinking about much then suddenly PING, all the elements aligned and I had answers for 3 of the script issues one after another. It's important to let ideas marinate in the grey matter sometimes, clearly my CPU was processing something heavy in the background for a few days. Writing eh - it's a strange thing for sure.

Out with the old, in with the new…

2023 has been in many ways a drag for filmmakers, but in other ways it’s been a chance (have we had the choice?) to forge new allies and ready ourselves to break new ground in 2024. The Hollywood strikes have affected projects we’re working on, and the knock-on effects have caused many of our acting and film crew pals in the UK to have severe limits slapped on their already tough to maintain careers. Not to mention (we’re mentioning it) the apparent and terrible slump in investment in the UK film industry. But then, as far back as thirty years ago, we’ve heard a lot of “there IS no British film industry” so perhaps nothing’s changed.

It’s not all doom and gloom, as what tends to come out of times like this are new and fierce partnerships, a greater understanding of each other and a respect for what we’re all trying to do, whether it’s get our faces out there, write some damn good scripts, or heaven forbid actually make some films. In a world of buzzwords like Artificial Intelligence and CONTENT, there’s the notable decline of compassionate, human-driven initiatives, with much fear and uncertainty about the future: will we all be replaced by machines? Is Hollywood a deaf robot? IS there a British film industry?

And yet, clearly there is hope, because here we - and thousands of others - are, pushing forward with commercial and artistic films and linking with producers, actors and crew for some highly ambitious feature film projects for 2024. Here at Outward alone, we have a slate of features lined up for pre-production and we know of many others who are preparing the same plans: to create films that people want to see, get obsessed with, and dash to the movies to watch.

There is always hope…

Happy Tuesday! We wanted to write a few words about PATIENCE, or as it’s called in the film industry “hurry up and wait.”

Patience is essential but it can drive you a bit insane at the same time. Ideas take months and sometimes years to develop into scripts; scripts can take an age to hone to the point of semi-completion, and that script will change so much during the actual film production… which itself is such an epic process that it’s divided into three sections.

So this is where PATIENCE comes in, but also - just to be contrary - so does the ANXIETY that drives the process of change and moving forward. Without that urgency to create - if we sat about all zen - films wouldn’t get made, so as filmmakers we find ourselves constantly jammed uncomfortably between the two states of waiting patiently and *gently* nudging.

So what do we do in the meantime? We make films with as many resources and as much help as we can find. These scrappy, low-budget feature films (we’ve made five!) may be just that, but each one is still an achievement, even if it is sometimes a scaled-down version of the Hollywood blockbuster we had envisioned at the start of the process.

The best thing you can do is create, and that goes double for uncertain times and in the face of doubt and apathy. Hone that script, gather those resources, and make films. And be patient at the same time. And if you figure out how to do it, please let us know.

There is a lot going on today here at Outward Films HQ. We have begun/began (beginned?) a script breakdown for our first feature, contacting various people and organisations to get a realistic idea of our budget. We are also running our finance model past a few producers to get feedback - trying to ensure any investments are as attractive and risk-free as possible.

At the same time, we are preparing to film Kestrel Investigates tomorrow with a celebrity guest... which is particularly mind blowing for us (can't say who yet, but all will be revealed in good time). So it's all hands to the pump, props being made, batteries being charged, moustaches trimmed and combed, bedding swept, toilets disinfected, toenails clipped etc etc.

And in our downtime today we are also putting the finishing touches to a script being filmed 9th/10th December.

There are days for rest, today is not one of those days.

Back in the olden days you would go along to the cinema not knowing what might be showing, but because you’d made the effort to get there you were determined to watch something. Once me and a friend went to see Mortal Kombat because he had fallen in the sea and we needed somewhere for him to dry out. Anyway, back to the point - occasionally you’d find a gem of a film on a small run and for years it would feel like your film. I feel that way about the 1998 sci-fi noir classic Dark City - i had low expectations and it blew me away. What films did you catch at the cinema that unexpectedly popped your noggin?

Between 2009 and 2019, through MilesTone Films, we made four feature films in York, all privately funded and all made with the talent of our peers and the support of our community.

We wanted to make films that were varied in style and scope and had the chance of being shown in cinemas alongside more generously budgeted movies. The budgets varied and the combined budget of ALL four of these films - action comedy CrimeFighters, improvised dogme drama Amber, dark comedy Whoops! and found footage zombie comedy Zomblogalypse - was only just into six figures.

Outward Films is now looking… well, outward, as we aim to build on our joint experience as independent filmmakers by working with producers to create films that are seen on an international scale, with budgets that allow us to achieve our ambitions and see our film through to sales and success.

Watch this space, as they say. And also watch these films! They’re all available either online, on demand or on disc: follow the links on each picture.

In 2010 we made a film called Kenneth, under Monster Island Films. We had no idea what we were doing, but we gathered crew and cast, rented a big house, organised locations and set a countdown on our website. I remember seeing the counter at ‘25 days to go’ as it marched relentlessly towards our first days of filming. The day came, the month of June was a blur, i lost a stone in weight but each day more scenes were filmed. Compromises were made, we started with a shot list and it always dwindled as we ran out of time. By the end of June we all disbanded and the edit began. It took two years. The film was released and we won some awards, it sits on Amazon and we receive no money when someone buys it. I couldn’t be more proud of the people who worked on that film, we all learnt a lot, it was, to use the cliche, a baptism of fire. Yet through all the hardship there is nothing quite as exciting as making a film. Being on set. The laughs, the drama, the heroism when someone solves a critical issue.

Outward Films has made some huge strides today towards making our first feature under our new banner - the first of three unrelated films that increase in ambition and budget and all have one thing in common: a solid original story. Because that’s what we do as filmmakers, we tell stories. I hope you enjoy the ones we are about to tell. We think you will.

When I first started writing, I was a teenager - it was always comedy sketches. Really silly things like buses turning sharply and people falling out of the window, or Darth Vader singing along to Elastica - I found these hilarious. As I got older, I realised comedy is an inherent part of life - in fact without humour life would be pretty miserable. Comedy always appealed to me and it was everywhere in the 90s.

We had the great programmes from the 80s like Fry and Laurie, Black Adder or The Young Ones whilst at the same time the 90s brought the bulk of Red Dwarf, Father Ted and of course The Simpsons. It's hard to describe to someone who wasn't there how much The Simpsons changed the comedy landscape - it created so many comedic mechanisms or formulas that we use today and for my generation 'Simpsons quotes' became shorthand references for everything.

In case you are wondering, this post isn't necessarily going anywhere or making a point - just rambling as I sit with my morning coffee. For the sake of conversation, what TV or film quotes do you use everyday?

One thing we consistently hear at Outward Films is that audiences don’t want ‘Comedy Horror’ films. That they are seen as difficult to sell or not as popular as Horror Comedies - ie films that prioritise the Horror but with comedy elements.

But some of our favourite films are Horror Comedies - films like Beetlejuice, The Burbs, Evil Dead 2 or Shaun of the Dead - all stone cold classics.

What do you think? What are your favourite Horror Comedies?

WELCOME TO OUTWARD FILMS!

Set up by established filmmakers Oliver Semple and Miles Watts, Outward Films is a creative partnership with over a decade of writing, directing and producing experience in independent feature films. Between them they have also created/co-created the cult web series Zomblogalypse and Kestrel Investigates, with the former now a feature film on streaming and blu-ray, and the latter now in production for its third series.

Oliver also co-wrote the feature film Kenneth, streaming on Amazon, and Miles co-directed the award-winning serial killer comedy Whoops! now on VOD.

THE PARTNERS

Outward Films is so named because we have been looking internationally as well as nationally to produce and distribute our latest film projects. Miles is working with producers to create a large scale action-horror film, while both Oliver and Miles have several scripts with producers with the aim of making a slate of mid-budget genre films.

PRIVATE INVESTMENT

However, while we look further afield, Outward Films also embraces our lo-fi filmmaking roots and realise that while ambition and growth is desirable, low-budget, privately-funded films are also something we enjoy making and which have put us on the map. So while we’re always striving for a larger canvas to tell our stories, occasionally we still want to make small, cult productions to honour our own roots and celebrate films of all scopes - and we’re always on the hunt for INVESTORS who might be keen to be part of the journey of these exciting smaller productions.

So… please join us on our journey, spread the word and expect some news soon!
