In Texas, dude ranching began in Bandera County around 1920 and within 10 years, dude ranches spread all across Texas.
Since World War II, roughly twelve dude ranches have been continuously listed in Texas and the majority are near Bandera, the "Cowboy Capitol of the World."

On this day in 1839, some 500 Texas troops under Kelsey H. Douglass defeated 700 to 800 Cherokees led by Chief Bowl in what is now Henderson County. The two-day battle of the Neches was the principal engagement of the Cherokee War; it resulted in the forced resettling of hostile Indians from East Texas and virtually ended hostilities in that portion of the state.

On this day in 1850, a mob of soldiers burned down the store of Fredericksburg merchant John M. Hunter, destroying all Gillespie County records up to that time.

Hunter had refused to sell whiskey to a soldier named Dole. When Dole became abusive, Hunter fatally stabbed him in the chest. 50ยฑ angry soldiers returned the next night, looking for Hunter, but the merchant had fled town. Several townspeople attempted to salvage the county records from the burning store, but the soldiers prevented them.

On this day in 1874, a party of about 700 Plains Indians, mostly Cheyenne, Comanches, and Kiowas, attacked a buffalo hunters' camp about a mile from the ruins known as Adobe Walls, in what is now Hutchinson County.

The defenders, twenty-eight men and one woman, gathered in three buildings and repelled the initial charge with a loss of only two men.

The larger significance of this fight is that it led to the Red River War of 1874-75, which resulted in the final relocation of the Southern Plains Indians to reservations in Indian Territory.

A Grey Fox can often be spotted in the trees and can make 20-40 different sounds, including yips, barks, meows, and screaming. They are very curious animals, super playful, and have been spotted stealing golf balls from courses.

Today in 1940, 108ยฑ boys participated in the first annual Lone Star Boys' State program. The program, sponsored by the American Legion, provides teenage boys with training in functional aspects of citizenship and teaches constructive attitudes toward the American form of government.

Participants are grouped into mock cities, form a mock state government, and elect state officers. The program is held each summer, usually in June, at the University of Texas at Austin. Bluebonnet Girls' State is a similar program for girls.

On this day in 1944, D-day, James Earl Rudder commanded the Second Ranger Battalion as it achieved one of the great feats of arms of the Normandy invasion.

Rudder, a native of Eden, Texas, stormed the beach with his Rangers at Pointe du Hoc, and under constant enemy fire, scaled 100-foot cliffs to reach and destroy German gun batteries. The battalion suffered higher than 50 percent casualties, and Rudder himself was wounded twice. In spite of this, he and his men helped establish a beachhead for the Allied forces.

On this day in 1885, Harrold, a railroad town in east central Wilbarger County, was officially platted. The settlement had been known as Cottonwood in the early 1880s, when it had a stage station and a store near China Creek.

As the western terminus for the railroad, Harrold became an overnight boomtown. Prospective settlers were offered train rides from Wichita Falls and were welcomed to the town by a brass band.

The boom days abruptly ended, however, when the railroad reached Vernon. Harrold remained a railroad shipping point and agricultural center with a population of several hundred.

Today in 1888, the Port Isabel lighthouse was temporarily extinguished. The brick lighthouse had a light that consisted of four lamps on an iron platform.

It was discovered that the United States government did not have title to the land, and the lighthouse was closed the following year. The government, refusing to give up, sought title to the land and acquired it in 1894, but by then the lighthouse was permanently abandoned because it was no longer needed. In 1905, the site was restored as the Port Isabel Lighthouse Historic Structure in the 1950s.

On this day in 1864, during a critical moment of the fierce Battle of the Wilderness, the Southern battle line was crumbling and Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, was heartened to see the Texas Brigade, under the command of John Gregg, arrive on the field as reinforcements.

With a cry of "Hurrah for Texas!" Lee ordered them forward against the Union army and, carried away by his enthusiasm, began to lead them into the charge. The Texans, unwilling to risk their idol in battle, stopped and gathered around him, yelling "Lee to the rear!" and held onto his horse until he withdrew. The Texas Brigade suffered severe losses, but the Union army was once more fought to a standstill.

On this day in 1554, three Spanish ships were wrecked by a storm off Padre Island near present-day Port Mansfield. A Spanish salvage expedition arrived at the site of the wrecks within two months and managed to recover less than half of the 1,000,000 ducats the ships were carrying. After that, the remains of the three ships were undiscovered until the late 1960s. Artifacts recovered from the San Esteban are now in the Corpus Christi Museum.
