Brother Van (born William Wesley Van Orsdel) has been called the most well known and most loved man in Montana. He died on this date (Dec. 19) in 1919 at the age of 71.

A circuit rider for more than 50 years, Brother Van held a service almost every day and traveled 15,000 miles each year to spread Methodism throughout Montana. He also established a college, hospital, a children's home and school.

A native of Gettysburg, Penn., Brother Van arrived at Fort Benton, Mont., in 1872, where he preached that same day in a saloon and earned the nickname of "Brother Van."

Brother Van was fond of a song titled "Harvest Time" by W.A. Spencer, which continues to have significance among Methodists in Montana today.

December 2, 1737, was a sad day for John Wesley. It was on this date (287 years ago) that John boarded a ship and set sail for England, thus ending his missionary career in America.

The story goes like this:
Upon arriving in Georgia in 1736, John befriended a young woman, Sophy Hopkey, and, according to his journals, he fell in love with her and contemplated marriage. The Williamsons sued for defamation of character. The trial dragged on for months, and finally John wrote in his journal, “I saw clearly the hour was come for leaving this place.”

John arrived home in early 1738. Four months later, on May 24, his heart was "strangley warmed" during a conversion experience. And the rest, as we know, is .
