Japan’s economy has contracted unexpectedly because of weak domestic consumption, pushing the country into recession and causing it to lose its position as the world’s third largest economy to Germany.

Gross domestic product (GDP) shrank at an annualized pace of 0.4% in the last three months of 2023, the Cabinet Office said on Thursday, after having contracted by an annualized 3.3% in the previous quarter. A recession is typically defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

The decline was well below market forecasts. Economists polled by Reuters had expected GDP to grow by an annualized 1.4% quarter-on-quarter in the October to December months.

The data confirms that Japan’s economy was the world’s fourth largest behind Germany in US dollar terms last year.

Japanese bullet trains were a big success from the very beginning and became the nation's favorite within just a few years. Many European countries adopted Shinkansen technology after Japan's success! As a result, France introduced high-speed TGV trains in 1981, followed 10 years later by Germany's Intercity Express.
Tokaido Shinkansen, the first high-speed rail line in the world, has carried over 5.6 billion passengers since it opened. It operates 13 trains per hour during rush hour, each carrying over 20.000 passengers!

In most cities, drainage canals are the least places you’d expect wildlife or aquatic animals to thrive. However, in the city of Shimabara on Japan’s Kyushu island, the street’s gutters are so clean they are home to hundreds of koi carp. The unusual fish habitat is a product of the volcanic activities of Mount Unzen that resulted in the 1792 earthquake and tsunami. The tragic natural disaster killed 15,000 people, but it also triggered an abundance of fresh water springs. Clean water began to flow through the city’s drainage channels; so in 1978, authorities decided to release colorful koi into the 100-meter-long waterway.

Mount Fuji, or Fujiyama Japanese Fuji-san mountain, central Japan. The highest mountain in Japan, it rises to 12,388 ft (3,776 m) near the Pacific coast in central Honshu. Mount Fuji, with its graceful volcanic cone (dormant since 1707), has become famous internationally. It is considered a sacred symbol of Japan, and thousands of Japanese climb to the shrine on its peak every summer. The mountain is the major feature of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, created in 1936.

Tomorrow is the Festival of the Ages in Kyoto, a 2km procession starting from the Kyoto Imperial Palace until Heian Jingu. Kyoto locals and geimaiko dress up in period-piece costumes from the Meiji-period (1868) till the Enryaku-period (782). We wonder who we will see tomorrow!
