MEDIA BIAS WORSE THAN MAANDAMANO!
It is a shock that Kenyan media is taking an open bias approach on national issues like politics. As a journalist, I am sad and deeply ashamed, this is not the media I knew.
I was having a conversation with a colleague who is also a "retired" journalist like me and he had the same concerns. What is making our fourth estate behave like this?
I will attempt to answer and share a possible fate of our media. First, is the media ownership, it's unfortunate that media houses in Kenya is owned by non media professionals or politicians.
The owners "dectate" the content in their media houses, this has been an ailment since independence but it is now a cancer that will kill the media industry in this country completely.
Secondly, the love for handouts by my colleagues, the "brown envelope journalism" is a practice that has been happening in Africa since time immemorial it has just become bold this time.
And to wrap it up, is about the quality of media training that some journalists have been exposed to. In Kenya, we have properly trained journalists and on the flip side we have some practising without proper media training.
With all this, most Kenyans have just relied on social media for news. The new media in Kenya is vibrant because our mainstream have ceded a lot of grounds. The trend will continue and results will be constraint revenue and sacking of journalists.
A good example is Kenya Kwanza government, they ran their campaign 90% on social media and won against an opponent who enjoyed 100% mainstream media coverage.
The same media still believe they control public opinion, I am here as one of you to wake you up.. Men, we lost it, the respect of media authority is far gone, people watch/read or listen to media and confirm if it's true on social media.
JUST TELL RAILA TO STOP THE MADNESS.
Looking at todays front pages, I feel like crying and laughing at the same point because the media is glorifying obscurity. We had an
