“There’s a magical realism to saying ‘I am a virgin again’ – it becomes true – this is the logic of the album: that one can reset their relationship to experience, to the sensual,” Nat says.

Simultaneously elegant and sardonic, Harvie’s storytelling builds from nascent melodies into gleaming tomes of Q***r Americana – a dazzling arc of personal evolution, shared experience, and sonic accrual. A musical expression of memory, a restless and triumphant vocalization of existential discovery, Nat asks the questions: “What kind of person would I be if I never had to define anything about myself? How tough would it be if I had no claims to make about who or what I am?”

From first hearing the album through to getting to know the Nat behind these captivating songs, and especially watching them dream up all the fantastical imagery to tell their story … has been an experience of birth and discovery of our own, and the purest reminder of why we’re here doing this thing.

“I was a certain kind of child, now I call upon the intensity of fear, euphoria, hope that a child can experience.” SHOVEL deals with childhood in a new way for our Minneapolis songmaker Nat Harvie. In this video by Nat + Hollis Sparhawk, starring Nat + Nancy Sudak (Nat's mom), their relationship is flipped: "the younger self takes care of the older self, instigates catharsis, becomes the self again. Age and experience are blurred. Childhood becomes the future," Nat says. "My mom tells me that when I was a young kid I used to ask her “when am I going to be a baby again?” – I guess that curiosity remains."

Their best work – ‘New Virginity’ – drops on June 7. Dig “Shovel” til then.

“Shugarboy” is an enigma of celestial art pop draped in Q***r Americana, with Harvie’s lyrical brushstrokes, at once elegant and sardonic, gleaming in the wavecrash of synthdust on tropical-melodic shores. “I can’t have the love I need. I can hurt people. I can forget myself,” Nat says of the song. A collaboration with fellow MPLS producer Andrew Broder (Joe Rainey, Lambchop, Fog), featuring vocal cameos by Lillie West of Lala Lala and experimental pop musician Brent Penny, “Shugarboy” is a fleeting coalescence of Harvie’s singular, communal sound.

The most Boiled of all releases arrives today. The third proper Ape School record 'Hog Heaven' drops from below with a video for "Trust No Ratboy" by the Mayo twins of Disaster Artist – song also features Tone Whitfield on perfect bass, as he is wont to do. Vinyl is soon to hit its boiling point, preselling now at Bandcamp.��The full length also features appearances by Daedelus, Flanafi, Che, Cheeky, Jayno J F No of FET.NAT, plus MJ's dad and kid. The cover is hand drawn by Cassidy McGinley, and is mind melting.�� As Michael Johnson tells it: "This record was an audio experiment that never resolved, but it produced 11 off-kilter, warped ass “pop” songs that most directly references my solo album 'Nonsense Goes Mudslide.' Others have said it reminds them of the self titled Ape School record. It’s no band record is what I mean. This isn't a record meant to be marketed. It's a tombstone for my youngest friends to visit when I check out of here. It's a little carving on a big tree in a giant dying forest."

'Hog Heaven' is a torturous fidelity experiment, demented electronic rumblings and sinister neo-primitive Americana from the pits of Michael Johnson's own particular psychedelic hell. The album is preceded by "Positively Green" featuring Daedelus who MJ called to the trough some twenty years into their collaborative friendship. A skeletal yet brilliant cloud of dark jazz, “Devil Does” wrests levity from the feeling of being possessed. Steph’s meandering nylon guitar and dour vocals were recorded to cellphone, embellished only by the subtle drum flourishes and colourful synthesis of collaborator Olivier Fairfield.
