Already in its 4th programme - This month's Synch Pulse experimental film evening focusses on the art of direct animation.

Wednesday 27th March
The Rose Hill

The programme will consist of archive and contemporary shorts, illustrating the varied techniques for animating directly onto the surface of celluloid film - from 35mm right down to the smallest gauge, super 8. Experimental soundtracks also play an important role, with electronic music and synthetic sound featuring prominently in the selection.

The next instalment of SYNCH PULSE heads to The Rose Hill on 24/1 (after an excellent first instalment which we were glad to have as part of the 21st CINECITY)

Devoted to screening experimental shorts, this free entry film night is geared towards the uninitiated as well as devotees of underground movies and alternative soundtracks - compiled and presented by Brighton artist-filmmaker and electronic music composer, Ian Helliwell.

Selecting a different theme for every event, each one will include local and international avant-garde shorts from past and present, reflecting a wide range of experimental film, animation and documentaries with an emphasis on electronic sound. The hope is to create an ongoing series of short film programmes - plus occasional discussions with experimental filmmakers - to create a nexus for independent, left field movies.

This second Synch Pulse event and the first to be held at the Rose Hill venue is themed around dance.

Are you a young person brimming with creative ideas? Our friends Carousel & South East Dance are looking to commission at least two young people, including one who has a learning disability, to make a film each exploring the theme of Women in Landscape.

You must be between 11-19 years old or up to the age of 25 if you have a learning disability.

You don’t need to have experience in dance or filmmaking to apply because we’ll supply mentoring and support as part of the commission package.

The JEFF KEEN - GAZENTENARY! isn’t over just yet.

JEFF KEEN: 100 YEARS OF DR GAZ continues until 23rd December at John Marchant Gallery

The exhibition includes, large format photographs, film stills, paintings and a rolling presentation of film.

Open 10-6 Thursday - Friday and 11-6 Saturday.

Our 2023 Audience Award Winner is:

Filmed over a period of 10 years, 'Where is Heaven' builds into a fascinating group portrait of people from all walks of life as they document the joys, trials and tribulations of living off grid.

6:30PM - Duke of York's Picturehouse THE DELINQUENTS - an inventive, existential heist. Director Rodrigo Moreno plays with audience expectations, subverting genres with numerous twists and turns.

Before tonight's screening of SCALA!!! at Duke of York's Picturehouse there will be an opportunity to see some original copies of the cinema's iconic monthly programme posters from the early 1990s. Collected by director WIZ, they will be displayed alongside posters for Scalarama, the UK-wide film festival inspired by the Scala's eclectic programming.
