DEPROGRAMMER CULT - TACTICS FOR MANIPULATION LP (CDR-14). Harkening back to the sounds of the pioneers of early 2000s noisey metalcore, the Massachusetts quintet unleashes their debut LP balancing equal parts anger, anxiety, frustration, and existential dread in a vicious cycle of distortion and feedback, compressed into 8 tracks of seething and sludgy metallic hardcore. Track 2, "ContrĂ´le Milieu," is streaming everywhere now, showcasing the band's mid-tempo rage, beating the listener down and casting aspersions on what they knew to be true about living. "I don't think so. Living life on the edge. Living traps your brain. It's all a lie." Watch the lyric video on YouTube now (link in comments).

28/10/2022

One of my favorite aspects of running a label is working on designing artwork, record packaging, and shirts. It’s definitely one of the more taxing parts of the process, but I’m very proud of the aesthetic of CDR and feel as though there is some cohesiveness to the music/art relationship for each release. As you can maybe tell, CDR has been pretty light on content and releases lately. So, to try and stay engaged, I’m going to make a series of posts dedicated to the design of each CDR and CDR-adjacent releases. We’re going to work backwards chronologically (approximately), starting with the latest release that isn’t CDR proper, but close enough.

Crowfeeder - Dirt. If you don’t already know, Crowfeeder is my band, and the Crowfeeder LP from 2017 was the first ever CDR release. Our most recent EP “Dirt” has not yet seen a physical release, but I did the design work for the art that accompanies the digital release, seen in the first image of this post. The cover depicts a warped image of a building, overlayed with textures made from very light text and linework, all in grayscale. The title is also grayscale, written in a typewriter font that is slightly decayed. The only other color present is perrywinkle that is used for the thin border and the CF logo. Let’s try and track the development of this cover.

To be blunt, we had absolutely no fu***ng idea what to do for the artwork on this release. The music writing, recording, and mixing process for this record came together pretty quickly, but as mastering was wrapping up we had to figure the art out as we wanted to release it within a month or two. The only real source I could draw from was the inspiration behind much of the song content: the life and crimes of Carl Panzram, an absolute bastard of a human being and serial killer.

Without wanting to hit the nail on the head too explicitly (e.g., a picture of Panzram), I started looking for other related media: pictures of his gravestone, the cell where he spent his final days, etc. The building shown on the cover is of the prison where he was kept during his final incarceration before being executed by hanging. The image itself wasn’t very high resolution, so I needed to treat it in some way that would allow it to be printable in larger formats (i.e., 12” LP jacket) if that were to happen, so I gave it a circular/spiral warp filter. I think this also adds some ambiguity as to what the image actually is, and actually kind of makes it look like the building is on fire or something. Kinda cool looking.

I’ve always struggled with adding texture to images, typically going with drier, flatter compositions, but the warped image itself just looked too clean for an EP called “Dirt,” so I first added in a very faint block of text that features the lyrics to the record repeated in order to fill the entire frame (this is actually the only instance of the lyrics being printed anywhere). The line drawings that were added came from an earlier draft of the art that used schematics of a gallows, which still read as diagrammatic in the image, which I like. Up to this point there was still no color, but I wanted some type of accent in there to sell more of a mood or tone to it. I started by going to some shades of purple pulled from the photos used in the No Flowers LP, which were too dark and brooding, so I just shifted the saturation and brightness of one shade of purple down until I hit perrywinkle, and it just seemed to work. We’re not a very bombastic band, so a color scheme that reads more somber and weak seemed fitting.

And that’s that. I’m very happy with how this turned out, but it was a major struggle to make it happen. Previous ideas were very underbaked and just didn’t fit the feeling of the record. Some of those are featured in the images that accompany this post.

Hopefully I’ll actually do more of these posts. Listen to Crowfeeder - Dirt (streaming everywhere). Stay disappointed.
