Too Much Peace & Quiet

Skanking social commentary from John McGlone and pals. This is a speaker-shaking, floor-quakingi, dub-tastic debut from this Liverpool collective who are helmed by local troublemaker John McGlone who has a background in punk with a crew of collaborators who help make the rhythms mighty and the bass sound like an earthquake. With artwork by Stephen Scott (who’s also painted album covers for The Zips and Reaction) this terrific set of tunes is in turns angry, world-weary and combative. McGlone doesn’t take prisoners; the scathing “Under Grenfell Skies” is deceptively sweet but with an undertow of menace and the thunderous groove of “Bullets and Batons” is a clear standout. Opener “Rudeboy Jamdown” sets the tone with its clattering ska/dub and the feeling of creeping dread persists despite the, at times, sunny-sounding backing. A sparkling debut. McGlone however, pulls it off with aplomb, delivering a collection of crafted songs laced with strong melodies and atmospheric laments.When he’s back on home territory, McGlone again pulls no punches. ‘The lines ”Believe me boys, Great Britain ain’t that great, believe me boys, its a land of greed and hate” lead us into ‘Just another victim’, which floats and twists through a whole varying landscape of musical ambience before closing via his anguished scream of ”hate!”. The album is not utterly devoid of a celebratory element, with opening track ‘Ruff’n’Tumble Down’ being a jaunty rocksteady-style tribute to McGlone’s scouse roots. In terms of production, there’s some beautiful layered mixing inside these tracks, with some particularly effective walled backing vocals and tasteful guitar work. McGlone’s trusted rhythm master, Grant Walker (drums) ensures everything swings groove-wise across what are a fine set of songs, composed and performed by a guy who’s paid his dues over and over again.
