Lampas + Apparel Co. English /// Español ► The English word "lamp" originated from a Greek word, pronounced lamp-as, which means to give light.

It's that same Greek word that is found in the New Testament i.e. "lamp" is one of a few words in English that are the same words as written in the actual Holy Scriptures. That doesn't mean however that the word that was spoken was the Greek word; it was more likely Hebrew or Aramaic and then recorded in Greek for "all the world."
