Let’s Get Lost is a group exhibition opening on 22nd August at The Lido Stores exploring the figure in the landscape and features Broughton & Birnie, Jake Clark, Daisy Clarke, Robin Dixon, Adam Hanson, Linda Schwab, Ben Walker.

For these artists, Let's Get Lost is all about thoughtful journeying, searching, linking places, discovering, remembering stories, linking times and landscapes, and reorientation. This is reflected in their painterly interpretations of the theme, from dislocated landscapes, interrupted perspectives, and figures dissolving and then emerging from their surroundings.

The official photos are in from the Kent British Press & Broadcasting (KPBA) awards, and so we thought we'd share some highlights from the day, as well as the feedback we received from the judges for our two awards which were Magazine of the Year, and Kent Voices.

Kent Voices Award

Brightside Publishing publishes the Broadstairs Beacon, the Folkestone Foghorn, the Margate Mercury, the Ramsgate Recorder and the Whitstable Whistler. Founder and director Clare Freeman says all the magazines feature diverse and inclusive content, giving a voice to a wide variety of people and businesses in East Kent.

The judges agreed saying it was great to see so many diverse communities featured in a loving, but not fluffy way. They called the publications ‘brilliant’ and said they were ‘proper community mags’. Congratulations to Clare and the team.

Kent Magazine of the Year

Now, although each magazine was entered separately, the judges simply couldn’t choose between them so decided to jointly award Kent Magazine of the Year to the Broadstairs Beacon, the Folkestone Foghorn, the Margate Mercury and the Whitstable Whistler – try saying that after a few drinks!

They’re all produced by Brightside Publishing, led by founder Claire Freeman. The judges fell in love with all the magazines, calling them ‘local, quirky, interesting and something you’d want to read cover to cover, even if you don’t live in the town they’re covering’.

Thank you to KPBA and to the team for the acknowledgement, and for such a fabulous afternoon. The awards are a testament to the importance of local journalism, and also a testament to the desire for it too! We're incredibly proud to have achieved this, and want to thank all our readers, advertisers, stockists and the whole of the Brightside team for helping make this happen.

The session is free and you can just drop in with no booking required. It's suitable for 5+ years, and anyone under the age of 12 needs to be accompanied by an adult.

Please note this drop-in workshop may need to finish early if materials run out.

We are proud to be part of the diverse fabric of our town, and stand by all the communities around the UK affected by the rioting.

If you're feeling understandably concerned at the moment, we thought we'd share some sound advice from Time Out on how to show support during the ongoing unrest:

- Donate to local communities
- Support charities combating racism
- Support charities supporting asylum seekers and refugees
- Be careful about what information you share

For a more comprehensive read on these points, go to timeout.com/uk/news/how-to-support-communities-during-the-ongoing-riots-in-the-uk-080624

And finally we'd like to add, take heart and comfort in the positive efforts of the people of the UK to care and look after each other during this time.

Thank you Rebecca Strickson for letting us share this illustration 💖✊

Dance against the light is an exhibition of limited edition photographs by Tony Nandi, ARPS (1950 – 2020) featuring images exploring Tony’s extraordinary ability to capture the essence of dance movement under performance lighting.

Curated by his wife Julie, this selection of images from Tony’s digital and analogue archive, explores the use of contra jure, or ‘against the light’.

Tony was one of the country’s foremost photographers of the performance arts for almost forty years – with a special interest in dance. He was intrigued by the challenge of conveying a dynamic time-based, three dimensional, emotionally charged creative production into a two-dimensional image. His ultimate intention was always, through timing and composition, to invite and engage the viewer to sense the physical, spatial and emotional experience of the performance.

To celebrate Margate Soul Festival, Margate's Rise Up Residency organised a new series of murals which now adorn the Lido, and is the first time that the whole façade of the building has been primed and painted for a single project as impressive as this.

Rise Up Residency, which is an ocean awareness mural project spearheaded by Margate local artist Louis Michel, invited artist Breeze Yoko from South Africa to install a large-scale mural alongside works by more than fifteen other artists who also created murals especially for the festival.

Margate Soul Festival ticket holders were the first to experience the new murals, but now the space has reopened to the public, you can go and see them for yourselves.

Artists include Breeze Yoko, Catneil, Chu, Dream Safari, EKS Graffiti, Copie, Herne Bay Spray Paints, Gabriel, Guerrilla Pest, Notice It,
Outta Gram, Pattern in Shadow, Soul Art.ist, Flyscribing_ and Louis Michel.

Head over to or on Instagram to find out more.

This Wednesday and Thursday is the last chance to see an installation of new paintings/works by Russell Chater who presents a (homo)erotic narrative with nods to both the autobiographical and art historical; the spiritual and the sexual.

Thoughts around surface, touch, display and concealment are teased - with works, perhaps ultimately, a reflection on the nature of painting itself.

Quench Gallery in Cliftonville launched in 2020 and since then has gone on to support 68 artists, making a big impact for artists establishing themselves in their career, as well as providing workshops and education programmes for the local community here in Margate.

The not-for-profit gallery is dedicated to giving emerging artists and curators a platform to develop new work and put on exhibitions, and they have supported these artists with an astonishing £89.4K of bursaries since 2021.

The gallery is facing difficult times ahead though, having been unable to secure funding like many other arts organisations in the UK at the moment. But, the Quench team (pictured here; Guy, Gemma and Lindsey) are determined to secure their gallery's future, having noticed the worrying decline of such artist-led spaces.

And so, many incredible artists have rallied together to support Quench as they launch a huge auction of works on paper to raise the funds they need to keep going.

The auction will be hosted online through the Quench website from 27th July at 5pm, closing on 11th August at 6pm and features some incredible works donated by artist such as Dame Tracey Emin, Dame Sonia Boyce, Jeremy Deller, Caroline Walker and this year’s current turner prize nominees Pio Abad and Delaine Le Bas.

You can go and see the works in person at Quench on Saturday 27th July at an opening reception from 5-8pm.

Quench Gallery's website is www.quenchgallery.co.uk

You can also follow Quench on Instagram to keep up to date with all news and updates

Margate-based artist Gav Toye who works from LIMBO Studios is currently holding a solo show in their project space entitled High Adventure featuring his new large-scale paintings.

The title of the show is taken from the 1982 Kenny Loggins album of the same name. Loggins who has written many film scores is mostly known for the theme music from Footloose, the kind of culture which surrounded Toye when he was growing up and which is influencing the paintings he is making today.

Congratulations to Hornby who are going to be spending the summer celebrating 70 years in Margate.

The model railways manufacturer, which was established in 1901, set up a state of the art factory in Westwood Cross 70 years ago. As well as having created thousands of jobs during this time, they also went on to produce hundreds of thousands of train sets over the years which have made their way to homes around the globe.

Celebrations are being marked with a model of Margate in the foyer of Margate’s train station which, powered by motion sensors, includes the train station, Dreamland, ice cream vendors, the beach, the coach from Only Fools and Horses, the clock tower, cabbage fields and of course model trains which move through the model town, with tens of thousands of visitors expected to enjoy the attraction in the coming weeks.

The model version of Dreamland Margate’s concert venue has a small crowd at the moment, but in August visitors will be able to have themselves scanned for a miniature 3D model which will then be added to the audience, as well as receiving a personal copy too*.

Dates for the 3D scanning at Margate train station in August will be announced on Hornby Model Railways as will details of competitions and further celebrations this summer, so be sure to give them a follow!

*There is a fee for being scanned and 3D printed, find out more at uk.hornby.com/catalogue/70-years-in-margate
