The College Editors Guild of the Philippines has recorded 206 cases of campus press freedom violations across the country, from 2023 to 2024. Censorship and attacks on fiscal autonomy, and so is state surveillance and red tagging.

This sets a dangerous precedent where student journalists were not spared of attacks from figures who were supposed to secure their welfare and freedom.

Nonetheless the Guild, together with hundreds of student publications, resisted attacks and strived for genuine campus press freedom. Amid a wave of darkness and false hopes, Guilders stand and unite the masses towards the realization of the people's agenda.

The protest put emphasis on national issues such as the high price of commodities, low wage, red-tagging, and calls for real agrarian reform.

Kung hindi ngayon, kailan pa? โœ’๏ธ

The independent student publication of the University of Nueva Caceres, The DEMOCRAT stands with incumbent Editor-in-Chief Aila Joy Esperida and Photojournalist Head John Harvee Cabal, and all the student journalists and activists who engage with socio-political issues by taking a stance against anti-people policies, especially for those who were accused of being members of the New Peopleโ€™s Army (NPA) despite having no evidence proving that they are.

Last September 22, a letter of invitation from Barangay Bigaas, Calabanga was sent to the residence of Esperida. The letterโ€™s content invites her and her parents to the barangay hall on Sunday, September 24 to have a talk with the Philippine Army, as signed by the Brgy. Captain Felino A. Vale. Upon inspecting the letter, they found that there is no official barangay seal nor any reason stated behind the invitation.

According to Kgd. Charlie Vale, two uniformed personnel from the PH Army visited the barangay and asked them details about Esperida. The Army also showed pictures of her which were verified by the Kagawad and told them that Esperida participated in the rally and was an activist.

Meanwhile, The DEMOCRAT Photojournalist Head Harvee Cabal received the same letter from Barangay Causip, Bula, signed by the Barangay Captain Ruben P. Lordan, inviting him to the Barangay Hall without any information on the reason why he, along with his parents, was summoned.

The letters for both Cabal and Esperida were sent after The DEMOCRAT staff participated in the 51st Martial Law Declaration Anniversary Commemoration around the landmarks of Naga City last September 21. They were approac

ALERT โ€ผ๏ธ

Days after the Martial Law Declaration Anniversary Commemoration in Naga City, UNC The DEMOCRAT Editor-in-Chief Aila Joy Esperida and Photojournalist Head John Harvee Cabal received separate letter of summon from their respective barangay leaders inviting their presence for a talk with the military.

This comes after earlier reports of students, youth activists, and campus journalists in Naga City summoned by their local leaders only to be interrogated and red-tagged by the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Same incident happened to The DEMOCRAT's former editor-in-chief and 2021 Naga City Youth Mayor Berlineth Nymia Montes.

In September alone, not lower than five are the similar incidents involving students, campus journalists and youth leaders who have been subjected to military visit in their barangays.

We condemn these attacks to the democratic rights of our campus journalists and youth leaders.

We call on the Naga City Government, and the Department of Interior and Local Government to investigate and take action in this series of incidents causing grave intimidation and harassment to our youth. We call on local government officials to look after the welfare of their constituents and not be instrumental to the fascist agenda of the military.

Stop the attacks! Defend press freedom!

On this significant occasion, we are reminded of a pivotal moment in history that tested the resilience and spirit of our nation. It is a day etched in the annals of our collective memory, marked by the profound sacrifices and unwavering determination of those who stood up for justice, freedom, and democracy.

We pay homage to the brave individuals who, in the face of adversity, raised their voices and took a stand against the suppression of basic human rights and civil liberties. Their actions serve as a poignant reminder that the pursuit of justice is not a solitary endeavor but a shared responsibility that binds us all.

Today, we stand in solidarity to honor the memory of those who endured the hardships of Martial Law and its repressive measures. We recognize the sacrifices made by activists, journalists, ordinary citizens, and countless others who suffered in their quest for a more just and equitable society.

As we reflect on this dark chapter in our history, let us draw inspiration from the courage displayed during those challenging times. Let us commit ourselves to upholding the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. We must remain vigilant in safeguarding these fundamental values, ensuring that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.

The declaration of Proclamation No. 1081 in 1972 marked the beginning of a dark era for Filipinos. Hundreds of martyrs have sacrificed their lives to collectively rise against then dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Sr.; and hundreds still carry the nightmares only to have to live up to seeing the dictatorโ€™s son rise to power again.

As watchdogs, and as we resist press repression, we bear the responsibility to shed light on and protect the truths of the atrocities of Martial Law, especially now in the time of massive networked disinformation.

ThePILLARS Publication, the official college publication of Ateneo de Naga University, stands with the people in remembering the atrocities of the Marcos regime and condemning the Marcoses' historical distortion and disinformation.

The 1972 Martial Law heralded an era of a seemingly endless debt, corrupt politicians and fear among the powerless and the weak. An approximate amount of 26.7 Billion dollars of debt accumulated during his term, the shutdown of the mainstream media, the depletion of the Philippine economyโ€”what many Marcos Apologists claim the โ€˜Age of the Golden Economyโ€™ pulled the country to a grave poverty affecting the Filipinos until today. An unjustified victory, paid for by the poor and the oppressed.

The glamour during the Marcosโ€™ regime was extremely glorified, disregarding the fact that there were billions of debt that the Filipino people would be obligated to pay until or later than 2025. According to the report of Ibon Databank, by the time Ferdinand Marcos Sr. was ousted in 1986, the countryโ€™s debt had inflated to $26 billionโ€“a blow weโ€™re suffering to this day.

Furthermore, the fear to voice out instigated during the martial law is still alive today. The liberty to expression and speech is compromised when the talk is about checking the balances of the government, thus many people would rather watch in the safety of the sidelines, where their opinions are neither heard nor addressed.

Historical revisionism and spreading of fake news became more rampant with another Marcos in power. These people are using the mass to absolve their family on the crimes that went on for years.

May the 51st anniversary of the Martial Law remind us to remember the sacrifices and atrocities that happened during the Marcos regime amid the ongoing revisions of what has happened in history.

Blood continues to flow, for tyranny has brought its way back to the presidency. With fingers lingering to take democracy, lifted steels are rushing down, silencing every voice that tries to escape its tight hold.

Only two years after the dictator's descendant sat, the truth that lies on the surface is dragged to the abyss together with those who tries to reveal it. Facts are considered as enemies of the state demonizing anyone who shall speak of it. The blatant repression and suppression of the press continues to lighten what was once a journey of horror.

Never will it be a sin to defend those who defended and remember those who must be remembered. The shadows of the past will haunt the light of the present and is bound to harass the future if the flame of history is to be put out by a breeze of insanity.

As the perpetrators walk among us, may we remember the suffering of our ancestors. Standing against all odds. Breaking barriers that hide their story. Igniting the fire to protect our free hands that shall release us from the bars of defiance.

Media crackdown through the weaponization of the law and blatant press repression has crucified journalists in attempts of silencing the fourth estate and dissenters. Reporting social issues and irregularities โ€” their job โ€” is stifled due to libel and cyber libel laws which various legislators have repeatedly attempted to repeal.

The worsening attack on press freedom is characterized by the many Filipino journalists and media practitioners experiencing censorship, harassment, fabricated cases, and even loss of life. These entities and institutions haunts media practitioners in every way that stifles the freedom of the press.

To culminate this monthโ€™s commemoration of World Press Freedom, ACLC-Naga's Siyap Publication and AdNU's ThePILLARS Publication invites you to join its journalism forum with the theme PIGLAS: Defending press freedom through the role of student publications in the advancement of journalism practice in the Philippines.

From Davao Today

IN MEMORIAM. Families of the victims of the Ampatuan Massacre, together with members of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, gathered Sunday, November 20 at the massacre site in Sitio Masalay, Salman village, Ampatuan town, Maguindanao del Sur where they offered prayers and candles.

Thirteen years ago since November 23, 2009, 58 individuals including 32 journalists were killed in broad daylight and hastily buried in shallow graves.

The massacre, known as the single deadliest attack against journalists in recent history, was perpetrated by Andal Ampatuan, Jr. and his politically powerful relatives.

JUSTICE FOR BENHARL KAHIL!

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines castigates the killing of cartoonist Benharl Kahil.

Just last night, November 5, Kahil was reportedly shot dead in Barangay Pasandalan, Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.

The 91.3 Brigada News FM reported that the Lebak Municipal Police Station is still investigating the shooting.

According to cartoonist organization PITIK BULAG, he recently won the championship in the senior category of their October 2022 editorial cartooning contest about dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.'s Martial Law.

This came days after the International Day to End Crimes Against Journalists when the Committee to Project Journalists also put Philippines 7th on 11 countries that have worst track record in solving murders of journalists in the past decade.

According to CPJ's Global Impunity Index, there are 14 unresolved cases of murder in our country dating from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2022.

The Guild stresses that Kahil is another victim of the culture of violence, abuse, and impunity cultivated by authoritarian regimes, especially against truth-tellers.

Recognizing that this attack is also an attack on everyone, this killing renews the chilling effect of the deaths of Rey Blanco and Percy Lapidโ€”the first two journalists slain under Marcos Jr. administration.

This shooting poses a great threat not just to freedom of expression and press freedom, but also to other cartoonists, journalists, and advocates.

Thus, we unite our fellow Guilders, the cartooning and journalism community, and all freedom-loving Filipinos to join us in calling justice for Kahil.

Let us refuse to make Kahil another illustration of how deteriorating our human rights situation is today.

JUSTICE FOR BENHARL KAHIL!

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines denounces the killing of cartoonist Benharl Kahil.

According to CPJ's Global Impunity Index, there are 14 unresolved cases of murder in our country dating from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2022.

While the investigation is still ongoing, the Guild assumes that Kahil is another victim of the culture of violence, abuse, and impunity cultivated by authoritarian regimes, especially against truth-tellers.

Recognizing that this attack is possibly also an attack on everyone, this killing renews the chilling effect of the deaths of Rey Blanco and Percy Lapidโ€”the first two journalists slain under Marcos Jr. administration.

If assumption is proven correct, the shooting poses a great threat not just to freedom of expression and press freedom, but also to other cartoonists, journalists, and advocates.

Thus, regardless of the reason behind the killing, we unite our fellow Guilders, the cartooning and journalism community, and all freedom-loving Filipinos to join us in calling justice for Kahil.

Let us refuse to make Kahil another illustration of how deteriorating our human rights situation is today.
