If you’re a new game designer, do you start with rules/mechanics first or theme/narrative?

I’ve talked about how having both is best before you start really focusing in on a game, but how do you get there? Go to your idea diary and spend some time there reviewing what you’ve recorded. Look for ideas that jump out at you, and spend 15 minutes freewriting concepts for related rules or themes (whatever is missing). Keep doing this with new ideas until you hit one that resonates!

Crowdfunding tip 2! Get the approval process out of the way! Most platforms have a series of steps that have to be completed before you can officially launch your campaign.

While jumping through those hoops, don't worry about perfecting your project page. A rough summary will get you through the approval process and then you can refine it for the public eye.

Let’s try something new: Crowdfunding Tips for Indie Game Designers! Choosing the right platform is certainly the first hurdle.

For Tabletop Roleplaying Games specifically, I have found most campaigns on Backerkit, Kickstarter, and IndieGoGo. Kickstarter is my personal favorite both as a backer and an Indie Game Publisher.

Definitlely do your own research and see what makes sense for you, but the Kickstarter community it the game-changer for me.
