Love is the one way we are able to manage intense emotions like stress and homesickness. When we feel lonely in a foreign environment, we yearn for familiar faces and voices—those of the ones we love. When we also feel stress, we do activities that we love, or show our affection to other people. One of the many ways we can express this feeling is through food.

It is a saddening fact that when an OFW leaves their home to choose to work in a faraway place just to give their family a more comfortable life, they also leave their children behind, and after years of not being with them, the longing starts and continues to bloom around their hearts. A kind of longing that can be eased only by the chance of seeing each other again after a very long time.

Hindi biro ang maging dayuhan sa isang banyagang bayan. Hindi madaling ipagpalit ang bawat sandaling kasama ang mahal sa buhay para sa salaping tutustos hindi lang sa sariling pangarap kundi maging sa pangarap ng pamilya.

Patuloy naming titingalain ang inyong pagpapagal at pangangarap nang malalim.

Hindi lamang ngayong araw ng mga puso, kundi maging sa araw-araw na darating, hindi hadlang ang distansya upang iparamdam sa kanila ang ating pagmamahal.

𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 is known as a feeling of emotional distress caused by being away from your home and settling in a totally new environment. According to the study by WebMD, 50–70% of the general population has felt homesick at least once in their lives; this percentage includes the population of students, migrants, refugees, and those in the military.

Facing a new environment is not the only battlefield that migrant workers face. Stepping foot in an unfamiliar place brings them a sense of loneliness and longing for their homes.

In order to overcome it, 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙠 𝘿𝘼𝙔𝙊𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙥𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨:

Palasak na ang mga komentong kasunod ng pariralang “Mag-aabroad ako,"

Iba ang kinagisnang kaisipan ng mga Pilipino sa tuwing maririnig nila ang salitang ‘abroad’. Magagarang damit, sapatos, bag, gamit, at hindi mawawala ang ‘imported’ na mga tsokolate. Kung susumahin, hindi naman sila nagkakamali, ngunit sa patuloy na pananatili ng kaisipang isang makulay na bahaghari sa parte ng buhay ng isang manggagawa ang pagpunta sa ibang bayan upang magbanat ng buto, natatalikdan ang mga karanasang hindi man lamang nasisilayan ng ating mga mata.

Malaking bahagi ng populasyon ng Pilipinas ang mga OFWs o Overseas Filipino Workers. Sa katunayan, ayon sa tala ng Oxford Business group noong taong 2018, humigit kumulang 10 Milyon o tinatayang 10% ng populasyon ng bansa ang nabibilang dito. Karamihan sa kanila ay tinatalang nasa linya ng trabahong domestic, production, professional, technical jobs, at healthcare sa iba’t ibang panig ng mundo.

Sa kabila ng inaakalang matiwasay na tadhanang sasalubong sa mga sumusubok sa mundo ng migrasyon, mariing naitatago ang katotohanang malaki ang epekto nito kaugnay sa aspektong sikolohikal (psychological aspects) na isang maituturing na ‘blindspot’ sa pagbibigay pansin ng publiko.

Ayon sa pag-aaral, isang sektor ng mga OFWs na kadalasang nakarararanas ng psychological distress ay ang mga nasa linya ng pagtatrabaho sa mga private households tulad ng mga housekeepers, nannies, at mga caregivers na hindi naman lingid sa ating kaalaman, ay marami sa mga Pilipinong nangingibang bansa. Ang usaping ito ay hindi lamang maliit na bahagi sa buhay ng mga itinuturing na mga ‘bagong bayani’ kundi malaking usaping kailangang bigyang pansin at palutangin.

Sa susunod na marinig natin ang mga salitang “Mag-aabroad ako…”, hindi lamang sana natin pagtuunan ng pansin ang inaakalang matiwasay na bahagi nito kundi maging ang mga karanasang nakakubli sa pagod nilang mga ngiti.
