2024 Fin Clipping is August 24th!
8AM Start

Come join us the morning of Saturday August 24th for our annual fin clipping of the baby coho! A big milestone in their lives as we mark them as hatchery fish, and transfer them to the big pond to grow more before being released into the river in the spring.

All are welcome! We provide the supplies and instruction, as well as lunch and a raffle for all our volunteers.

UPDATE from the July 19th WDFW Commission meeting:
The meeting has concluded, and here are the key outcomes. The Cougar vote was made (6-3) and went over better than expected. Although the commission is adopting rule changes that are not based in science and department recommendation, some amendments were made by those on the commission who put value to not ostracizing the hunting community.
- We will have a 13% cap on cougars that includes all human caused mortality, from hunting, recorded tribal hunting, conflict removals, etc. Units will close once the 13% threshold is reached.
- Units that surpass the 13% mortality before September 1st will be allowed to go up to 20% instead of closing. We already have two units that surpass that area in the Chewelah and Spokane areas.
- We will lose the month of April from our cougar season.
- The amendments remove the sunset clause on the 20% so units with high conflict removal will have more protection from commissioners who would likely prefer that unit with high conflict do not open at all indefinitely.
- The amendments also direct the department to open a CR 101 for the 2025-2026 season. This will be revisited next year and the staff will be able to provide their recommendations following the new GMP and whatever science they have in the works.
The wolf downlisting vote was played out as a disturbing political game by several commissioners. Unfortunately in the end, there was a vote of 5-4 rejecting the downlisting of wolves to both sensitive and threatened. Wolves will remain listed as state endangered for the next five years until our next periodic status review, despite the tremendous recovery our wolf populations have made and the recommendations strongly supported by science by our WDFW staff.
Thank you to everyone who has spent time and effort engaging in the public process over the last year for wolves and to everyone who has pushed back against the cougar rulemaking over the past nine months since the petition was initially introduced by anti-hunting groups. More to come from the Coalition explaining todays votes.

Sportsmen and women of Washington, it is time to gear up for the June 20-22 WDFW Commission Meeting in Vancouver, WA.

Cougar hunting opportunity and wolf management are on the line. This is our last chance to provide testimony before the July vote! We need you to come and make your boice heard. A strong hunter presence is absolutely essential as anti-hunting and animal rights activists will be seeking to take up space and shut us out.

It is time to make a presence like we did back in October.
Make your voice heard in reject the proposed changes to the cougar season.
Support the departments recommendation to down list the Grey Wolf.

Meeting will be at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver. The days to show up in person to provide testimony are Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd.

The Conservation Coalition of Washington will provide more information as we approach the meeting date with the agenda and signup information.

Take a stand and make your voice heard for your lifestyle. We have strength in numbers, but it takes all of us doing our part!

Summary of the proposed changes to the Cougar hunting season:

- Lowering the quota to 13% (from 16%)
- Including all human-caused mortality (conflict kills, road kill, etc.) in the quota/guideline
- Removing the month of April from the hunting season (9/1-3/31)
- Potential to increase guidelines to 20% in some units where the 13% cap is met before September 1st- this part of the rule changes will Sunset after 1 year, requiring a majority vote to reinstate

On this episode of the young guides podcast we have Dan Gates from .r.w.m to discuss the importance of standing up for hunting and hunters across the nation. If you don’t know Colorado is facing a potential ballot measure in which could not only ban cougar and bobcat hunting in Colorado, it also could affect the rest of hunting in Colorado and across the nation as well. I always thought that this was a ban on big cats in Colorado only but Dan breaks down how it can become a bigger issue in a state near you very soon.
We hope you enjoy this episode!
Make sure to support organizations like to stay up to date on the issues hunting is facing across the nation. Also support .r.w.m to help join the fight and set the foundation to stand up for hunting not only in Colorado but across the Nation.
These organizations are doing outstanding work to help benefit wildlife and keep numbers for hunters to harvest wild meat for generations to come.
