While the heavy snow has ended, there is still some light snow falling near the Missouri River in south central South Dakota. We are not expecting much accumulation but it will keep some snow on roads that could produce a few slippery spots. This snow will end later this morning but areas of light snow will redevelop over southeastern South Dakota as well as west of Hwy 60 in southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa. Any accumulations will be less than inch.

Sioux Falls Area 7 Day:
Very mild weather continues for the next week! Official start of Winter is already tomorrow! Sure won't feel like it! Temps in the 50s to kick off Winter how about that!! Finally we see moisture coming in for Sunday thru Tuesday! A rainy Christmas likely!

18/12/2023

Get ready for the wind to howl tonight. Gusts up to 45 mph will be possible into Monday morning.

The coldest day of the upcoming week will be Monday, but temperatures will still be near normal.

If you want warm temperatures to continue, you'll be happy with the forecast this week. If you're looking for a white Christmas, those chances remain very low. There are some signs of a stronger cooldown after Christmas, however.

17/12/2023

If you're looking for colder temperatures, they are no where to be seen in the forecast ahead.

The coldest day of the next week will be on Monday, and those temperatures are near normal. By the end of the upcoming week, temperatures will again be pushing 50 degrees.

Looking for rain or snow? Nothing meaningful in the upcoming 5 day forecast.

What do we have? Wind. Gusty winds up to 40 mph may be possible Sunday night into Monday, and then again Tuesday.

Areas of light rain will spread in tonight. As temperatures fall overnight, rain will transition to snow or a rain/snow mix early Saturday morning. New snow amounts still look to be light, mainly less than one inch. However, if temperatures cool faster than expected, snow amounts will be higher especially east of Interstate 29. Make sure to be checking the forecast and road conditions if you're traveling early Saturday!

After another mild and breezy day today, light rain chances finally return along and east of I-29 on Friday and continue into Saturday morning with only light accumulations expected. Otherwise, more mild and dry conditions return as we head into the new week.

13/12/2023

Thursday will be a very mild early winter day with highs in the 50s. A weak system will move into the area Thursday night and will bring some sprinkles and flurries to areas near and east of I-29. While Saturday will be cooler, temperatures will still be above normal.

12/12/2023

The Geminid Meteor Shower will reach its peak Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, and just one day removed from the New Moon this year, there will be minimal moonlight to interfere with viewing! This meteor shower is often considered one of the best and most reliable because the meteors are bright, and optimal viewing conditions could allow for more than 1 meteor per minute! The latest forecast also calls for mostly clear skies in this area Wednesday night. For more info, check: https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/meteors-meteorites/geminids/

After a brief round of winter-like weather yesterday, look at what's coming before Christmas! It's hard to get much snow with a pattern like the one shown on this map. https://trib.al/qJdMr35

08/12/2023

Light snow returns late tonight into Saturday as a cold front slide through the region. While most areas will receive a dusting, locally higher pockets in excess of an inch will be possible north of I-90.

** THIS POST IS OUT OF DATE, AND NO LONGER VALID **

Heads up to those with travel plans on Saturday! We are expecting a round of light snow during the morning hours, which will likely result in slick road conditions into the afternoon hours. Be ready to alter travel plans accordingly if conditions warrant.
