West End Shade House is a testament to the idea that great design is not about creating a flawless environment but rather about crafting spaces of reciprocity that resonate with inhabitants, gracefully accommodating their needs, desires and imperfections.

From our editor, :

“A recent conversation with an architect had me contemplating our relationship with time. As we spoke, they told me about a newly finished house whose progress had been slowed by the pandemic. So far, so familiar. But, they went on, the consequences had been surprising: the drawn-out process had given the team a chance to ask questions, explore alternatives and further evolve the design. On reflection, the result was better.

In an era infatuated with productivity and efficiency, time is a luxury – and a costly one. But what are we missing in our state of perpetual busyness? For this issue of Houses, we are indulging in the benefits that can be reaped from a slower pace.

The homes in this issue offer their occupants a refuge from the busyness of everyday life. We hope they prompt you to pause and enjoy the stories of their making.”

Somewhat anomalous to its conditions, the structure presents more as an object than a shelter. It is not a big building – the elevated portion contains one bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchen and a living area – and the serrated dark brown corten steel cladding conceals it in the shadows of the tall gums.
