Why Should Book Authors Use Beta Readers?
Smart and professional authors need to get feedback from test readers–betas–before their manuscripts go to their editors. You’ve spent so much time, energy, and sweat equity on your manuscript, you can’t see straight—at least not straight enough to be objective about your book.

Writing is a journey. Sometimes it's easy, and sometimes we want to rip out our hair. How can you get into the writing zone? Setting up your space and your goals can make the ride more enjoyable.
Here are 3 of 13 Ways to Get into the Writing Zone.
1. Boost with the Beverage: Pour your favorite beverage—coffee? tea? And don't forget your water bottle.
2. Clear Your Writing Space : Make it clean and uncluttered. Move clutter or papers out of sight. The floor? Another room?
3. Minimize distractions: Turn off or silence your phone. Better yet, put it in a different room.

Tuesday Tips & Tricks: Avoid clichés.
Be original instead of using some old, well-worn phrases like “It’s raining cats and dogs" and “He’s the ace in the hole.” Become more aware of clichés by reading cliché databases like Cliché Finder. If you use clichés, you’re marking yourself as an unoriginal writer. Readers will see you a mile away (Yes, that’s a cliché).
This is true, no matter what kind of writing you're doing. Students, business writers, and book authors beware!

Halloween or Holloween? Let’s think about this.
Hollow, pronounced HAH-loh (like the American o in hot), means empty on the inside. The owl sits in the hollow oak tree.
Hallow, Pronounced Ha-loh (like the a in hat), means to make sacred, to sanctify. Hallowed = holy.
All’s Hallowed Evening, got shortened to All Hallow’s Eve, to Halloween.
It’s not pronounced, “Holloween.”
If you need a memory aid, maybe thinking of a witch’s HAT will help you get the right sound. In fact, you should make the same a sound when you say “Halloween” as when you say “happy.” (thanks to Cheryl Moore Brinkley, public speaking coach, for this tip)
What’s your preference?

Go ahead. Use the singular "they"! It’s okay. We don’t use this "he or she "or "he/she" stuff anymore (unless your style guide insists).
Use "they" to refer to singular nouns when you don’t know the gender of the subject.
Check out these sentences:
The teacher is here, but they need to set up their presentation first.
The student who receives their acceptance letter should be so happy.
Think about this: Someone named Sam may identify as male or female. We don’t know unless we ask (and that’s a whole other tip).

Tuesday Tips & Tricks - Cut These Five Words. These words don’t say much, so your writing can sound vague and somewhat amateurish. Get rid of them!
1. Really—really? “I’m really just trying to . . . “
2. Just—so unnecessary. “I just thought I’d write you a note.”
3. Quite—dilutes the meaning. “I don’t think you quite understand.”
4. Perhaps—makes you sound uncertain. “Perhaps we could meet for lunch.”
5. That—leave it when it precedes a noun (“I love that house.”), but cut it if a sentence still makes sense after removing it. (This is the best blog post that I have ever read.”)
