Hold the Note A Magazine for people who love music. Based in Ohio and West Virginia. But we're the sister that loves music, and all of the talent our home state(s) hold.

Here at Hold the Note, we're fans of music: live music, local music, songwriter music, scream-out-loud music, music that makes us laugh, cry, dance, and all the other things the power of music can do. Being a sister magazine to Clutch MOV, we are in love with everything West Virginia and Ohio have to offer us. Why "Hold the Note"? In addition to a gentle tribute to "Clutch" (Get it? We "hold" them

close to us?), we liked the play on words with holding a note as a performer, as a fan, and even holding a "note" as a letter or bit of info that we found valuable. So, there you have it. Hold the Note. If you're seeking info on local live music venues and events, you'll find that, here. Want to know more about your favorite WV and OH musicians? That's here, too. Wish there was a place where all of your local musical resources could be brought together by people who are madly in love with the magic of music? Seeking lessons, stores, open mics, and overall community? You've found it. Please check in here, our page, and our Insta feed, to see what we're excited about, and proud to find in our own back yards. We'll be growing our site to its full strength over the next few months. Pretty please be patient while we rally up all of our resources, to bring you everything we've got. Thanks for visiting Hold the Note! Hope to see you again, soon!

Hold the Note EXCLUSIVE!

Check out Hello June's brand new video, a day before it's released to the public, right here:

And thank you to our teammate Josh, for the immensely beautiful review:

"Held and possessed within a sense memory, what Rudy tells us about her life is just as much about our own lives. All of us are occasionally transported into the frame of a memory and held there; it can wrap us like a warm quilt or soak us as cold as winter rain."

There is a photograph I have of my grandmother and me. It’s faded in the way that photos used to fade before they became digital things on glowing phones. Her head is tilted back, her eyes closed in laughter and her hair wrapped up in a towel. I’m standing there beside her, grinning. I remember ...

"'Cosmic Americans' is a full-throttle Jake Dunn and the Blackbirds album. The boys have found their collective sound as a five-piece, and they’re leaning in hard on their talents. Soaring harmonies, screaming guitar duels, and hooks you’ll be singing days later. The best band in the MOV just released their best album yet. Don’t miss it."

Our friend and teammate Corey Shields shares with us what he loves about Jake Dunn & The Blackbirds' brand new album, and why you should check it out.

You can go see this local MOV treasure, and celebrate their new album (and pick up a copy for yourself) at their Marietta album release party, TONIGHT at The Adelphia Music Hall!

With “Cosmic Americans,” Jake Dunn and the Blackbirds have taken their layered Americana sound, and turned everything up a notch. The music is more complex, the vocals are grittier. The entire album feels more intense. Jake seems to have given up his wishful heart for a turn on the dark side. So...

In case you haven’t been to our Instagram page in a bit, this week’s takeover is by our boy, Roy F. Bush - Music. Be sure to check in to see some of the many musical projects he’s a part of, and learn more about what he’s up to, in general.

Each week we have a local artist take over our page. Each time the artist posts enough to fill a screen cap, we make sure to share it here, too (so the photo is full of their posts). Check out on Instagram to see the artists’ full stories, and learn more about our great community of Ohio and WV music.

Question(s) for the musicians in our HTN family: If your goal is to get more people to listen to your music and come to your shows, how accessible is your music to the public before they make it to a show?

-Are you linking to online tracks?
-Are you posting live performances and/or polished music videos?
-Are you making it easy for people to find your music?

"Something special is happening at Static Fur shows. There is an arresting intensity to the band’s performances that shines through clearly on this immaculately recorded live set."

WV's post-punk, experimental, Static Fur has released their debut, live album, and our teammate Josh Beane is sharing the love on our website. We definitely think you need to check their music (and live shows) out.

**There is a TON of fantastic music being released right now in Ohio and West Virginia. If you'd like to write about any of it, drop us a message. We're always seeking contributors to help build up the local music scene.

Anything the West Virginia music scene lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Many of the finest Americana artists and singer-songwriters in the business are from the Mountain State. Likewise, some of the best metal acts hail from West Virginia. This state even has a pretty great little group

Hey Hold the Note Family,

Michelle here. I wanted to ask an honest question of any Mid-Ohio Valley area musicians (or those willing to travel to this area):

I am asked at least a couple times every single week if I know of anyone who would be interested in playing a simple, often acoustic, often family-friendly set for different local businesses. Sometimes it's restaurants, sometimes stores, bars, charity events...it's really all over the place with who is asking and where the artists would be performing. And a part of me is excited to think there could be so much more music being played and getting heard...

For months now (I guess maybe even years, really), I've been very protective of my HTN family. I immediately ask what the budget is, and what the expectations are, and often there's no specific budget for the music. Some businesses are willing to allow tips and/or charge a cover to help with costs...and I admire local businesses for wanting to have local music in their space...and because I do love local people and business, I thought maybe I've been thinking about it wrong. Can you help me?

I've been flat-out saying "No" to people when they tell me they don't have a budget set aside, before anyone even knows. But not every artist cares about specific income. Some artists genuinely DO enjoy playing, just to play (especially if it's for a venue or people they enjoy), and some enjoy bartering, or knowing they really are building their resume or getting a chance to maybe try new material in front on an audience...or a million other things I wasn't really thinking of...I just don't want to ever put anyone on the spot to agree to something they're not really excited about.

SO, MY QUESTION IS THIS: WOULD ANY OF YOU WISH TO BE PUT ON A RESOURCE LIST I COULD SHARE WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES, TO PLAY SMALL SETS, FOR LITTLE-TO-NO MONIES?

You could set parameters, even request minimum guarantees, and I can provide this list to people who ask me, connecting more effectively with anyone who might be interested in being a part of such gigs. Lemme know here or privately via Messenger, and I'll add you. I just can't ever put anyone on the spot to ask something like this, ever. Thanks all around!
