I love this scene in the film. It was always poetic to me. 8 months into a Coup and this very day a mob stormed the presidential palace and threw the Interim President out. A civil war was looming over the country and the economic situation was choking the population. In Ami Oularre’s Salon a group of Women Take their minds off of things by socializing and braiding each other’s hair.
This powerful scene is set to an incredible acapella by Wassolou singer Nabintou Diakite. Orphaned as a child Nabintou sings to her sisters that you haven’t reached full Womanhood until you have endured some of life’s deepest pains. From the film Music in Mali now touring and screening near you.
