Ever wondered what it's like to direct your first feature?

For our latest Talking Film, Moin Hussain takes us through the highs and lows of directing his debut feature Sky Peals, and the films that influenced the development of the story.

👽 Sky Peals takes us to eerie night shifts at a motorway service station, as Adam Muhammed begins to suspect he may descend from an alien species.

Did you know we're more than just an awards ceremony?

As well as running our annual awards and acting as British independent film's biggest fangirl, BIFA has partnered with We Are Bridge to provide our 2023 cohort of longlisted Breakthrough Performers with a bespoke package of support.

Running over six months, and informed by industry consultations, the programme will include sessions covering career development, wellbeing, casting, safeguarding and financial literacy in order to equip our cohort with the tools they need for a sustainable career in the industry.

In order to deliver this full package of support to the Breakthrough Performers, we are seeking help from our industry friends and supporters who share our desire to build an equitable and inclusive industry for all talent.

Toolkits, advice, training ✏️

'Thank you again so much for this opportunity, it was truthfully very enlightening.'
- Session participant

We run subsidised training programmes to support workers on-set and in the wider industry, covering topics such as Unconscious Bias, Fair Recruitment and Inclusivity in the Workplace, and Anti-Bullying and Harassment. These modules have also seen input from PACT, Directors UK, BAFTA, and BFI.

The courses provide participants with e-learning modules, followed by a live session with an expert trainer. In 2020/21, we delivered training to over 2,540 people, with 97% of Unconscious Bias Training participants saying that the course will make them reconsider their biases in the future.

Indie film for life ✊

Join us over the next few weeks as we dig into our archives and bring you film memories from some of the iconic films and names to come through BIFA since its beginnings in 1998.

The British independent film industry is responsible for producing such iconic films as Billy Elliot, Slumdog Millionaire, The Favourite, Bend It Like Beckham, Get Out, American Honey and Trainspotting.

Free from the commercial demands of their blockbuster counterparts, independent films take risks, using innovative techniques to explore big ideas and sensitive social issues, with an outsider spirit.

At BIFA, we’re proud to champion independent film.

'It's all about heart' 💙

Independent film is home to some of the boldest, most creative voices in British filmmaking, providing a route to market outside of the major studio system.

Without independent film, we would lose the stories of ordinary people facing the challenges of what it means to be human.

At BIFA, we’re proud to champion independent film. Find out more about BIFA and how you can support us https://bit.ly/4bPaGdS

Today we're remembering Jonathan Gales, who sadly passed away in 2022. Jonathan won the BIFA for Best Effects this year for his incredible work on The Kitchen as the film's VFX Creative Director.

He built the intricate and immersive world of the film and designed many of the models that made up The Kitchen and its depiction of a future London. Jonathan worked on The Kitchen over 10 years and was one of the founding partners of Factory Fifteen along with Kibwe Tavares and Paul Nicholls.

He will be greatly missed by the independent film community.

If you would like to donate, you can contribute to the fundraiser set up by Jonathan's family to honour his life and legacy. https://supportus.fhhv.cc/donation/jonathan-gales
