History Ireland History Ireland magazine has now been in production for just over 20 years.

Since 2004 it has been going from strength to strength, with a changeover to a full-colour format, a layout revamp and a move to bi-monthly publication in 2005. Each issue of History Ireland covers a wide variety of topics, from the earliest times to the present day, in an effort to give the reader a sense of the distant past but also to offer a contemporary edge. Every article is illustrated with photographs, maps or paintings to provide a vivid impression of the topic.

As the anniversary of the bombing of the North Strand, 31 May 1941, approaches, we are pleased to be able to have our artefacts from that event now on permanent display in Charleville Mall Library.
Item A: The screw cap of the 500lb bomb that was fell on the North Strand. This was the bomb that did most of the damage.
Item B: A magnesium incendiary bomb, of the type that was dropped near the O'Connell Schools on the North Circular Road.

We wish to acknowledge EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum for donating the display cabinet.

New History Ireland Hedge School PODCAST

'The life and times of Brendan O’Regan'

(Recorded live on Sat 13 April ’24, @ Shannon College of Hotel Management, Co. Clare)

Born in 1917 in Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare, Brendan O’Regan’s background was in hotel management and catering, working in the family hotel in Ennis, the St Stephen’s Green Club in Dublin and the
world’s first duty-free shop in Shannon Airport, where he is credited with inventing Irish coffee.

In 1959 he was appointed by Seán Lemass as the first head of the Shannon Airport Development Association (later known as the Shannon Free Airport Development Company), which stimulated the establishment not only of an industrial base in rural County Clare but also of a whole new town, Shannon.

Retiring in 1977, he remained active, founding Co-operation North. Despite these achievements, since his death in 2008 he has remained a somewhat obscure figure. To rectify this lacuna, join History Ireland editor Tommy Graham in discussion with Frank Barry, Úna Ní Bhroiméil, Seán Donlon, Brian O’Connell and Brendan’s son, Andrew O’Regan.

This Hedge School is supported by Sixmilebridge Historical Society.

From Ballot Box to Council Chamber: Kildare’s first County Council elections of 1899 - Talk in Naas Library & Cultural Centre this Saturday 13 April at 2.30PM

A reminder that Liam Kenny is delivery a talk in Naas Library & Cultural Centre as part of the Kildare Archaeological Society 2024 Programme this Saturday at 2.30PM to mark the 125th anniversary of the inaugural elections to Kildare County Council held in Spring of 1899.
In this talk, Liam will highlight how the 1899 elections achieved notable ‘firsts’ under a number of headings – not least being the first time that women were granted the franchise on the island of Ireland. Liam will bring a light touch to the topic with amusing accounts of election shenanigans in Co Kildare from the early years of popular politics.
All welcome!
