***SUNDAY SPECIAL*** #ROBERT_MARLEY
Today, we are going to take another look at the life and times of Reggae's most transcendent and iconic figure, Robert Marley (a.k.a Bob Marley).
Marley being the first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the process introduced the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley's music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience, vividly capturing not only the plight of the country's impoverished and oppressed but also the devout spirituality that remains their source of strength. His songs of faith, devotion, and revolution created a legacy that continues to live on not only through the music of his extended family but also through generations of artists the world over touched by his genius.
Robert Nesta Marley was born February 6, 1945, in rural St. Ann's Parish, Jamaica.
Upon returning to Jamaica in his youth days, Marley re-formed the Wailer with Livingston and Tosh, releasing "Bend Down Low" on their own short-lived Wail 'N' Soul 'M label;
He was posthumously honored by Jamaica soon after his death, as he was designated the nation's Order Of Merit award.
We @meritadvert celebrate this great icon who was steadfast to the truth irrespective of political threats and attacks made on his life.

***SAD STORY*** #Lucky_Dube
Here, we have a Legendary Singer, song-writer, also one of the Pioneers of reggae music (with a sad story), Lucky Dube.
Dube joined this earthy race in Ermelo , previously of the Eastern Transvaal, now of Mpumalanga , on 3rd August 1964. His parents separated before his birth and he was raised by his mother who named him Lucky.
Dube worked as a gardener in his childhood, but as he matured, he realised that he wasn’t earning enough for his family, he had to attend school. There he joined a choir and formed his first musical ensemble, called The Skyway Band.
At the age of 18 Dube joined his cousin’s band, The Love Brothers , playing Zulu pop music known as mbaqanga whilst funding his lifestyle by working for Hole and Cooke as a security guard at the car auctions in Midrand. Though Dube was still at school, the band recorded material in Johannesburg during his school holidays. The resultant album was released under the name Lucky Dube and the Supersoul .
Drawing inspiration from Jimmy and Peter, he felt the socio-political messages associated with Jamaican reggae were relevant to a South African audience in an institutionally racist environment.
Yet, Lucky experienced poor sales during the release of some of his premier albums, owing to the efforts to suppress anti-apartheid activist (which Lucky was one of) by the apartheid regime, but, that did not discourage him at all as he continued to perform live since his records were banned from time to time by the government. Nevertheless, his 1993 album, “VICTIMS” sold over one million copies worldwide.
Dube suffered imprisonment and exile on different occasions, yet he won four OKTV awards for the songs he made from his sad stories.
On 18 October 2007, Lucky Dube met his demise at a Johannesburg township called KwaThema as he was murdered shortly after dropping two of his seven children off at their uncle's house.

***SUNDAY SPECIAL*** #Jay-Z
Here comes today's Super SUNDAY SPECIAList, an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, record executive and philantropist, Shawn Corey Carter, (December 4, 1969) known professionally as Jay-Z.
Considered one of the best rappers of all time, he is regarded as one of the world's most significant cultural icons and has been a global figure in popular culture for over two decades.
He was an early supporter for the candidacy of Illinois senator and subsequent U.S. president Barack Obama, performing for free in voter-drive concerts financed by the Democrats' campaign. He also became acquainted with Obama himself, who stated "Every time I talk to Jay-Z, who is a brilliant talent and a good guy, I enjoy how he thinks. That's somebody who is going to start branching out and can help shape attitudes in a real positive way.
During his retirement, Jay-Z also became involved in philanthropic activity. In 2003, Jay-Z, together with his mother, founded The Shawn Carter Foundation.
When asked how he feels whenever he finds himself in the midst of scholars, he said, "Nothing!, I mean, they have learnt a lot of words, while I have lived a lot of life".
The above statement goes a long way to help summarise the youthful times of Shawn Carter. While in high school, he was shot at three times on different occasions with regards with his involvement in drug sales (in the struggle to survive) having lost his father, who firstly abandoned the family only to kick the bucket shortly after reconciliation with his mother.
Nevertheless, (though, he did not graduate) he has proved to be a successful rapper, artist, husband and father, having three children and a lovely
spouse, Beyoncé.
Jay-Z has won so many awards and nominations including 22 grammy awards.
We celebrate this success story today! Stay Inspired!
