My portraits of Louise Giovanelli in her Manchester studio prior to The Hepworth exhibition. A big thank you to Simon Esterson for the wonderful commission again and beautiful design. Thanks too, go to Louise. I really enjoy meeting up and working with both artists and musicians. Maybe because they understand the value of the visual image. To enter into an artist studio and see work in progress is something very special. I’ve been lucky enough to meet two artist who have exhibited at The Hepworth Wakefield recently; Louise and previously Hurvin Anderson. Attack ads, flags, celebrity endorsement, managed photo ops and Americana. The USA 2004 Presidential Election. Democrat John Kerry challenging incumbent President George W. Bush. Thanks go to the then Picture Editor of The Observer Newspaper (the Worlds oldest Sunday Newspaper) for that commission and commitment to many others important stories.

Katie Archibald returns to competitive action at the UCI World Track Championship, in Denmark, this week. She spoke with Don McRae at the National Cycling Centre, Manchester about the loss of her partner Rab Wardell, injuries and withdrawing from the Paris Olympics 2024. “Before losing Rab, Archibald says, “I really had everything in place. I felt so secure in how I could make this team better. I felt secure in knowing how to love, like I had my sense of self and what I cared about in the world. I suppose I still know those things, I just don’t have those things”.

We discuss how we both feel, on a sliding scale where 10 signifies an enduring happiness and zero is desolation. “Right now, my job satisfaction is a 10 for sure,” Archibald says before smiling. “Not to treat this as a therapy session, but the rest of my life is definitely not a 10.” .mcrae

Ribbons by Pippa Hale is fantastic. Honouring the many women within Leeds who have achieved, served and contributed to the City. On opening day whole families came to view the artwork. Searching for their own name or their loved ones name. It was so touching to see so many people engaging with a piece of sculptural artwork in a public place.

Just three days after an attack on the Southport Mosque the Far Right began to gather outside the Abdullah Quilliam Mosque in Liverpool. It is Englands first mosque set up by a English convert upon returning from a visit to Morocco in 1887.

It is an English Mosque set up by an English man.

Imam Adam Kelwick decided to cross the road to those gathering. He wanted to talk, ask why, answer questions and listen.

He also brought food. The mosque had prepared Burgers and fries to all those outside, either side of the pavement.

By the end of a night conversations were being had and handshakes were made and visit to the mosque arranged.

Let’s be clear if you are shouting

“Let’s get the Muslims “

“Let’s do Parly Road”

Then it’s a Race Riot and it’s Islamophobia.

Parly Road is Parliament Road in Middlesborough where the residents are predominantly black or brown.

The Far Right Riot on Sunday was predominantly white.

The Police were incredibly unstaffed. I saw the same four riot vans and three dog vans attending virtually every incident City wide.

There were no counter demonstrators.

Parliament Road and the surrounding area was trashed. Windows in houses smashed, nearly every car wrecked , shops looted.

Residents in Fear.

By the end of the night Local Parly Residents had to resort to defending the streets by themselves.

It all started with a very hollow minutes silence next to the City Cenotaph for three young children murdered in Southport, followed by chants of “we want our Country Back.”
