So many memories of you fill the first half my life..

The sounds of jazz, the smell of old ladies’ perfume and smoke fill my senses as I remember sneaking and hiding in the dj booth to listening and watch you play in my folk’s jazz club, The Café Unique, during bedtime.

I got myself in trouble by asking “ who is that man who talks so much”

It was you
I didnt know what the “gift of gab” was …My dad explained it and you were his example. A boy o boy did you have it, and man , could you play that sax!!!!

I watched the ladies swoon as you MC’d my dad’s Unique Association Band. You were one of the only FEW who could lead and handle the man i saw as a giant.(my dad) He respected your musical wisdom and talent.

And i grew to understand why he respected you so much
Some of My BEST high school moments were in that bandroom.

You intimidated most , but not me. I challenged you ever chance i got.

And you pushed me and us all to be more disciplined and to be more versed in our musical knowledge. Gone were the days of the PCHS band playing simple melodies and bass lines. You had us playing MUSIC..All them damn notes in them measures. Triplets, scaling, fueding melodies
Had Ilyas Muhammad playing high B flats all while high stepping on the field

I remember walking into your office to tell you i was trying out for Drum Major. You slammed down your pen said “ Bout time, nobody better for the job”. You shooked my hand . I welled up with tears.

The day of tryouts , i did my solo dance to “Groove Tonight” by EWF. After i finished you discreetly gave me a thumbs up under the pile of papers in your hands and a slight grin of approval..

You were a gift to us, and too those who were fortunate enough to be lead by you , taught by, and to hear you play.
