Tancho 丹頂

A rounded pattern named after Tancho crane that has a rounded red spot on its head. Tancho indicates the name of pattern also one category of koi variety. We can put "Tancho" in front of other variety name such as Tancho Sanke, Tancho Goshiki, Tancho Kujaku if it has Tancho patch on its head.

White koi with a single rounded Hi patch on the head is called Tancho Kohaku. Red circle on the white background reminds us of the Japanese flag.

羽 ha (hane) means wings, 白 jiro (shiro) means white.

Hire鰭 means dorsal fins, naga長 means long. Hirenaga Nishikigoi refers to Nishikigoi with long fins.

Hirenaga Nishikigoi was produced by Saitama Fisheries Research Institute. In 1977, the reigning Emperor (the Crown Prince at that time) visited there and advised to mate Hirenaga-koi in Indonesia with Japanese Nishikigoi to create the new elegant variety. They started to crossbreed and fixed it as one variety named “Hirenaga Nishikigoi” in 1982. You can keep them just by following the same ways as Nishikigoi.

Hinpyoukai 品評会
Hinpyoukai means koi show.

Each kanji stands the following meanings
hin 品 : products, items
pyou 評 : appreciate, judge
kai 会 : gatherings, meetings

It is said the first koi show was held in 1912 at Kizawa (now Kawaguchi Town) Niigata, and Nishikigoi was first promoted outside of Niigata in 1914 at Taisho Expo in Ueno Tokyo. Since then, koi shows continue to expand around the world now.

Kin Showa was originally produced by crossing Showa Sanshoku and Ogon.
Kin 金 means gold.

It tends to be that the brighter the luster becomes, the lighter the colors become, but the latest Kin Showa improved their luster and colors together.

Kin Showa has been getting very popular and strong at Botan Prize category of All Japan Koi Show and All Japan Young Koi Show. (Belongs to Hikari Utsuri category)

Kikusui 菊翠
kiku 菊 is the name of flower "chrysanthemum"
the kanji sui 翠 is literally derived from sui of Shusui 秋翠 (if you're wondering why, please refer to NISHIKIGOI MONDO P.166)

Kikusui was created by crossing Doitsu Kohaku with Platinum Ogon. Nice shiny background with luster and deep red patches are preferred.
