LO-FI ON A VERY GOOD HI-FI

Some while back I was chatting to my friend, Balearic Explorer, DJ & Producer, Darran Pownall. He was enthusing about playing on the extraordinary Hi-Fi system at London's King Cross venue, Spiritland. I joked that I would love to play some of my favourite Lo=Fi on their superlative Hi-Fi. But I wasn't really joking. Darran kindly invited to me to join him on 13th April, 2023.
To me, Lo-Fi to means that elements of a track have been distressed or degraded in some manner. Tantalising spoken words are a common element. Vocals often sounds as though they coming from a poorly tuned radio in the next room. The ground might be muddy but instrumentations gleam like jewels through the mud. To me, it sounds like the place where memories are made. Lo-Fi also fits nicely with my broader fascination of what i choose to call Deep Jazz.
This is the first 50 minutes of my set that night. Enjoy Howard

DEEP JAZZ VOL 5 @ WORD OF MOUTH

Although it was a few years ago when I started hunting for what I am calling Deep Jazz, it was only this last year that I started playing it out. Last season I played a few Deep Jazz sets in my evening sessions round the pool at Pikes Hotel. Sundays at Word of Mouth gave me more opportunities to share the tone of Deep Jazz. Towards the end of the season as the sun was setting at Word of Mouth I began trying out some tracks for this 5th Volume. So, this is dedicated to that special place. :-)

DEEP JAZZ VOL 4

Previously I called this collection 'Lo-Fi Jazz'. I changed the name to Deep Jazz because I think it better encompasses the range of flavours.
However many of the tracks here do fit my definition of Lo-Fi including one or all of the following: Muffled or muddy mixes, lush orchestral swathes, soulful vocals - sometimes sounding as though they are coming from a poorly tuned radio in the next room - tantalising spoken word samples, distressed or decayed samples, psychedelic phasing and riffs or tones that gleam, like jewels in a muddy field. The additional flavouring of Jazz makes some of these tracks super cool.
I find some of this music very emotional. They are not hooky or catchy dance tunes but touch something quite deep reminding me of fleeting memories. Play this in the background. Let the tunes wash over you. May they give you as much joy as they do me.

DEEP JAZZ VOL 3

At it says on the tin ....more Deep Jazz - not sure if this is a recognised genre yet but it should be. I have just completed Vol 5 which I will post in a couple of weeks and have much more that I keep finding to support this as a genre.
Whatever, I intend to continue pushing this side project as whenever I do play some as part of my sets I always get people asking me what I am playing. A couple of times during the summer season (2022) I have played sets round the pool at the famous Pikes Hotel, Ibiza, which have been very well received. I would love to share this passion in some other cool venues that are open to it.

DEEP JAZZ VOL 2

This volume features quite a lot of tracks that might be called Lo-Fi. So what is Lo-Fi? My understanding is that it is a genre of music in which the mix is often muddy in texture but out of which glistening instrumentation can shine. Often samples have been decayed, compressed or distressed, with melodies drifting on the wind of extreme phasing. In particular I favour tracks in which the vocals sound as though they are coming from a slightly out of tune radio in the next room.
Thinking about how we store memories it occurred to me that while the memories might be crystal clear (though often incorrect) the circumstances in which memories are created will often be chaotic and not nearly as pristine as we would like to think. In a reverse manner I think that some Lo-Fi tunes with their chaos and shifting focus has a tremendous capacity to carry emotion.

DEEP JAZZ VOL 1

For the past few years, in addition to my regular Balearic mixes, I've also been working on a musical side project. Initially I called these mixes "Lo-Fi Jazz". Now, as I'm preparing to publish the 5th Volume I realise that although Lo-Fi is still an important element of this collection it isn't broad enough to cover the tone I'm looking for. I've therefore decided to rename the series Deep Jazz and republish the series again at a higher, WAV, quality recordings.
I'm quite proud of this series and will be publishing the latest Deep Jazz Vol 5 as soon as I've republished the first 4 volumes.

THE JOURNEY

The Journey was always what attracted me to the Balearic vibe. It's a journey without boarders of genre or tempo. It's a journey that is open hearted, sometimes inspirational but always with a sense of fun.
This journey also features a smattering of some of the new wave of young Jazz musicians like Yussef Dayes and Tom Misch who are gradually taking the world by storm - you can expect to hear more of them in my live sets. Also this is a particularly nice little collection of quite trippy mini journeys within a journey.

60's REMIXED VOL 1

Having already put together two volumes of 70's Rock Remixes (you'll find them here) I thought it would be a good idea to turn my attention to that extremely rich musical decade of the 1960's. The 60's has largely been ignored by many remixes, possibly because many of the tracks of the period are less obviously dance tunes. However, I hope you will agree with me that there are a number of remix gems in here. Appropriately for the era, many of these remixes are rather psychedelic. So, inhale deeply and enjoy. BLUE SKY BALEARIC

Well this has been a long time coming. Blue Sky Balearic is a 2 hour journey through some of my favourite tracks from the latter half of 2021, including many which I continue to play as Spring 2022 approaches.
As usual it is a pretty eclectic selection, starting with an expression of gratitude and going through chilled, dubby reggae, bouncing jubilant latin, melodic tech and deep house.

IBIZA AWAKES

At this time of year Ibiza is a riot of colour with fields and verges full of wildflowers. It is also the time when the Gecko's come out of hibernation and are seen scampering about, in a much more energetic fashion than is normal during the heat of the summer. However there's another dimension to the Ibiza spring - it is also a time when people are busying themselves painting, polishing and refurbishing the bars, restaurants, hotels and villas in readiness for the seasons arrivals. This year these activities have an added frisson of enthusiasm.
In calling this mix Ibiza Awakes I am not thinking of an awakening from a deep sleep but rather a spirit to be awakened. This last year has been tough for many people but, whatever we might believe to be the causes and effects of these difficult times I am hopeful that many people will have developed a deeper appreciation of our shared humanity and the incredible value of open hearted human contact.

70's ROCK REMIXES VOL 2

A few years back I put together Vol 1 of Rock Remixes. This turned out to be my most popular mix so I am now returning with a further collection of gems from this decade. I must admit that I have not been completely strict about my classification and think there is at least one track that originates from 69 and a couple that my have strayed as far as 81. Whatever it made me reflect again on what an important decade 70's was for music, stretching as it did from encompassing the remains of hippy psychedelia through to punk and Talking Heads. There are many strands I have left out but then most producers seem to have focused on 80's for their remixes. I will be keeping my eyes and ears open for further remixes from this period and hope to return withy a further volume some time in the future.
