The new Fall feature issue of creemmag CREEM magazine, GONE COUNTRY, boot kicks out the jams from cover to cover in the only way that “America’s Only Rock n’ Roll Magazine” can. “Seems like everyone wants to be part of Nashville these days.”(Deborah Evans Price) And it’s true, but it’s been true a long time. Plowboy Records President and Co-Founder, Shannon Pollard, is a faithful subscriber and reader of CREEM. When he brought the new edition to the offices, he was particularly excited about the article slash interview with 73 year old music legend, Alejandro Escovedo, “Bittersweet Heart of the Rodeo”. Shannon has been a serious fan of Escovedo for decades, but through their collaboration at Plowboy Records, Escovedo and his band, THE FAUNTLEROYS, released their debut album, Below the Pink Pony(2014). That same year they had their live debut at sxsw. The band: ivanjulianofficial linda_pitmon nicholastremulis
and “the beloved troubadour”, Alejandro. Their collective bona fides make them a powerful combo and their reception at sxsw proved it. Having said that, Escovedo can’t be kept in a box, even if it’s a kickass one. So, still going very strong, he has a new solo album out, ECHO DANCING. Bob Dylan’s latest book, THE PHILOSOPHY OF MODERN SONG, published in 2022, is a “…master class in songwriting..sixty essays..” artist, legendary bobbybareofficial Bobby Bare ‘s 1963 hit, DETROIT CITY,(Danny Dill, Mel Tillis) is the lead off essay about a “prodigal son” chasing a dream. He paints a rosy picture in letters home but the truth is too hard to share; to suck it up and go back. Dylan summarizes it much more eloquent than I can.

I got to hang at the office with Plowboy Records President Shannon Pollard and his longtime friend and former bandmate, Roy Clary. Lots of laughs and stories shared. Roy is on the film festival circuit promoting 348 SONGS: THE FRED BURCH STORY, a heartwarming documentary of 91 year old Nashville songwriting legend, Fred Burch. Fred is highly entertaining and still writing every day(and enjoying shots of his favorite tequila😎). Roy’s next stop is Los Angeles and The catalinafilm festival. One of the greatest living singer/songwriters of our time is legendary BOBBY BARE. He won the Grammy for “Best Country and Western Recording” in 1964 with his mega hit, DETROIT CITY. I know, because 11 year old me practiced it on my Silvertone acoustic until I could play and sing it! Plowboy Records President, rshannonpollard, is committed to promoting living legends and, in 2012, released Bare’s thematic album, DARKER THAN LIGHT. Shannon and BOB DYLAN are in agreement, as evidenced by Dylan’s latest book of over 60 essays on the most important songs and writers of our time, THE PHILOSOPHY OF MODERN SONG(2022). He chose Bobby Bare’s DETROIT CITY to lead off with. Plowboy Records released standout Spoken Word/Visual Artist/Recording artist, stephenjkalinich ‘s album, SCRAMBLED EGGS, and I’ve gotta tell ya: you NEED to listen to it. Stephen has accomplished so much in his career. His co-writes with brianwilsonlive and The Beach Boys are some of their best. “Little Bird” ( /Stephen Kalinich)on the FRIENDS album and described as a “..masterpiece” (allmusicmagazine)blew Brian away for its “spiritualness”. He stepped in and did some rewrites in places but never took credit. Also co-writing with Stephen, Dennis released their “All I Want to Do” on The Beach Boys “20/20”album. Revved up by the raw driving power of the song, Dennis includes audio of of himself having, er… “fun”with a friend! Oh, boy!
Okay, I got a little carried away with Stephen’s backstory, that includes a who’s who of collaborations with many legendary artists. Obviously, I’m a fan. Alas, I’m including, “Wishes Do Not Get Me There,” from “Scrambled Eggs” with popular contemporary artist, Dylan LeBlanc. Dylan grew up at his dad Lenny LeBlanc’s side doing sessions in Muscle Shoals. Duo, LeBlanc and Carr, had the Top 20 soft rock hit, “Falling”. Cheetah Chrome. The Rolling Stones ain’t got much on Cheetah’s 49 active years with Cleveland Punk Rockers, deadboys_official and earlier protopunk band, Rocket from the Tombs. Cheetah is still touring with johnnyblitzdeadboys
and DB. He, along with label President, rshannonpollard
and celebrated historian, Dr. Don Cusic, founded Plowboy Records in 2012. Cheetah still performs with the mosh pit intensity of his earlier days at cbgbofficial so he has postponed Dead Boys European tour dates until he mends from some war wounds. Send Cheetah good vibes. He’ll be back onstage before you know it!
