Impossible de raconter les Groupes d'Animation au Gabon dans les années 80 sans évoquer un personnage clé: Patience Dabany.

Femme d'Omar Bongo, puis mère de son successeur Ali Bongo, c'est bien elle qui a tiré toutes les ficelles de cette histoire.

Extrait des liner notes de la compilation MERCI YAYA BONGO (Secousse records, 2024) par le chercheur Gabonais Docteur Omer Arsène Ivora Mouangoye:

"Marie-Joséphine K**a, une jeune fille du Haut-Ogooué, partage la vie d'Omar Bongo depuis 1958. Elle a du goût pour la musique, et si la fonction présidentielle qu’occupe son époux ne lui laisse pas vraiment le champ libre pour exprimer individuellement sa passion musicale, tout change à partir de 1972 et la création de l’U.F.P.D.G. Elle dicte aux autres femmes la ligne à suivre, et leur permet de disposer de tous les moyens financiers, logistiques et humains nécessaires pour mieux œuvrer dans la propagande du parti et d’Omar Bongo.

Marie-Joséphine K**a divorce d’Omar Bongo en 1987. S’exilant en Europe puis aux Etats-Unis pour entamer une carrière musicale solo, elle se fait connaître sous le nom de Patience Dabany, dit « la Mama ». Auteure, compositrice, percussionniste et chanteuse, elle porte le Gabon haut sur la scène internationale. Douée d’un talent jusque-là rare chez une femme gabonaise, elle brille dans plus d’un style musical comme la rumba, le rap, le zouk ou la salsa. Autre fait éblouissant : Marie-Joséphine K**a chante en plusieurs langues: batéké, fang, anglais, lingala… En outre, elle contribue au lancement de carrière de plusieurs artistes gabonais de renom."

We’re very conscious of the sensitivity of the material here. We hesitated for years before comitting to the project. If some people are wondering why on earth would a French label get involved with reissuing those records, the simple and sincere answer we have is the following:
Because this music is so incredibly good. A simple yet deep statement: such a great artistic work does not come from anywhere, anyhow.
And because the story of Gabon has a strong relationship with France, for better or for worse. Their story is also our story.

Hopefully, the liner notes, published in both French and English, and written by a Gabonese Scholar called Dr. Omer Arsène Ivora Mouangoye, will help the world understand the extraordinary story of the Animation Groups and Gabonese society during the 1980’s.
