Connections vol.6 (The Head-swipe) Feat. Mounir

Hailing from France and the Vagabonds crew, Mounir during his preparation for redbull bc one 2013 where we can see him perform 2 versions of the Headswipe (Basic & one-handed).
It's 1935 and as a Part of the "Three loose screws" Harold Childs performs a super similar movement to the modern day Headswipe.
Finally 1959 Nigeria we witness the earliest known iteration of a Headswipe ever recorded on film done in the rawest cipher!!!

It's the year 2011, Circle prince Cyprus final round is under way, bboys Pick up & Rif Raf are on the floor with a routine where Pick up throws an elbow back hand spring capping off the routine.
Journeying back to 1982 and connecting eras through movement to a gymnastics showdown between China and the USA where Mary Lou Retton on the floor throws a variation of the same move.

Connections vol.5 (The 1990) Feat. Cico

The 1990 another move that doesn't originate in breaking but was for sure taken to the next level.
Starting off we got Cico (Mauro Peruzzi) from Italy, for many years he was known for his brilliant power moves and dynamic combinations in breaking.
Together with groups like Second Floor, Killa Beatz and Spinkings he made a name for himself most known for being the first bboy to achieve 20 90's a record that stood for a loooong time until malish from Russia came took this move 3 steps further and is the undisputed king of 90's currently holding the world record at 50 rounds.
https://www.instagram.com/cicomauroperuzzi/

Miriam LaVelle, from Chester, Pennsylvania (USA) achieved fame as a specialty dancer throughout the 1940s. Her acts comprised sequences of beautifully choreographed acrobatic moves executed to music in a way that was totally unique. Essentially a cabaret artiste, she also featured in several films and television shows.
References to her in the media started to fizzle out as 1950s approached, the last mention being in mid-1950. Many of the nightclub entertainers would have been feeling a cold draft at that point with the decline in live variety, Miriam no exception. And although there's no further mention of her, it's possible that her career persisted for a few more years, but not so prolifically as to catch the columnists' attention.

In this weeks Retro dopeness video we got Mostafa an acrobat with 2 very impressive stunts.
The first one is a 1-Handed balance on a tower of bottles that looks pretty unstable but Mostafa makes it look effortless.
And the second and most impressive is a knife to sword balance!!!

Jumping back in time to 1953 Germany and an unknown duo of acrobats performing a side hollow to a mind numbing wavy transition to the floor that blew my mind seeing it for the first time.

Last but not least going all the way back to 1947 Finnish TV show that features another unknown acrobat performing the exact same side hollow to 1-arm balance as junior.
Amazing to see how all these moves connect through time.

Trio Hoganas was a Swedish acrobat troupe, internationally active in the years 1956–1975. The trio's members, all born in the late 1920s, came from Höganäs and initially called themselves Trio Höganäs.

The trio attracted attention with their art, mainly with the so-called "tooth rope", where two of the members held a rope outstretched with their teeth while the third performed balance numbers on it. It was the leader of Furuvik's Youth Circus Bodo West (Rosenberg), who in the early 1950s inspired them to this number and they performed with the circus from 1952.

Göthe Persson, Egon Larsson and Boris Bengtsson were the names of the original members. Persson and Bengtsson were later succeeded by Gert Karlsson and Egon Larsson's Danish-born wife Bende née Malling.

The trio toured Australia and New Zealand in the early 60s for more than a year. They have toured South Africa, Ghana, South America and the USA. In Sweden, they performed at the China variety show in Stockholm or at Liseberg in Gothenburg. In the 1969 season, they traveled with Cirkus Scott in Sweden. In September 1975, they worked at the Casino du Liban in Beirut. It was their last engagement. They subsequently withdrew and moved on to other activities.

Connections vol.118 (The Fake Gainer) Feat Daniel Grindeland

Welcome back to the channel, without further a do let's jump into this weeks video, starting off with Daniel and his signature move the "fake gainer" from 2022.
Daniel is one of the most dedicated and hardworking breakers who has played an integral part in putting Norway on the map. His achievements through his career are a clear result of the time and energy he spends on training and developing himself. With a deep understanding of his craft and all aspects that come with it, makes Daniel an incredible role model and inspiration for dancers around the globe.
https://www.instagram.com/daniel.grin...

Fast travel back to 1908 and a five minute short film from Georges Méliès, Méliès himself appears in the movie as the jester. He bounces about and tries to entertain the king with his acrobatics, and this is where we spot something that looks like the "fake gainer"

Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès (8 December 1861 – 21 January 1938) was a French illusionist, actor, and film director. He led many technical and narrative developments in the earliest days of cinema.

Méliès was well known for the use of special effects, popularizing such techniques as substitution splices, multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand-painted colour. He was also one of the first filmmakers to use storyboards. His films include A Trip to the Moon (1902) and The Impossible Voyage (1904), both involving strange, surreal journeys somewhat in the style of Jules Verne, and are considered among the most important early science fiction films, though their approach is closer to fantasy.

Retro dopeness vol.18 Feat. Paul Remus & Toy boys

This week, in the 18th edition of Retro Dopeness, we're featuring a trio of comedic acrobats from the golden year of 1951, presenting their routine. We've cherry-picked two standout moments that showcase their incredible skills.

Launching from a headstand, the trio kicks off their routine with an impressive inverted flag pose. The agility and coordination on display are nothing short of captivating.

High-Level Balance with an Awkward Twist: Brace yourself for a jaw-dropping moment as they execute a high-level balance in an incredibly awkward position. It makes you ponder – will we ever witness a headspin in such an unconventional stance?

Note: Contrary to appearances, those acrobats are not kids.

The year is 2002 and Lord of the floor is in full effect, Stuntman is on the floor representing originality stands alone dropping one of his signatures.

Back tracking to 1936 and Harold childs part of the trio "The Three Loose Screws"throwing almost the exact same move linking the 2 dancers through time.

Connections vol.3 Feat Phase-T

It's 2005 in Germany and Phase-T are on stage performing at B.O.T.Y a show that would qualify them to the battle for 3rd place, then little Kev with the aid of his crew is performing an Aerial cartwheel assisted by his crew.
Jumping back to to 1902 or 1903 where we got Julian's troupe acrobatics performing the exact same trick.
How do these two teams connect through time is unknown but remarkable to see the connection between through time.

Connections vol.105

You've probably seen it in crew battles, many consider this a breaking choreography but the truth it's not, it's origins are unknown but from the current evidence it looks like acrobatics is responsible for this routine.

Starting this weeks journey all the way back to 1910 and the Tontolini Acrobats from Italy to The Bragazzis in Sweden 1944 and entering the early and mid 50's with the Spanish(?) trio the Charlivels.
The Charlivels trio of acrobats are a very interesting act with many moves similar to breaking such as the 3-man helicopter Zulu spin dolphin dive etc.
The next act that finishes today's journey and takes us all the way to the end of the 50's era is the Lucky Latinos another trio of acrobats with moves we use in breaking today such as headspin drill.

Connections vol.103 Feat. Focus (The Shoulder chair)
The shoulder chair:
The original pose seems to originate from yoga, the pose was practiced from the 17th century onwards in hatha yoga under names such as Narakasana, Kapalasana & Viparitakaranasana.
In breaking it was pretty popular back in the 90's but now is one of the "forgotten" moves and not commonly seen, an example of a shoulder chair taken to the next level is Uzee rock (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/BQsqapIISBM).
On to the video, we start with Focus (Flow-mo Finland & https://bboydojo.com) demonstrating the shoulder chair followed up by a 2 drawings
The first drawing that dates back to 1830 depicts a very primal version of the shoulder chair that has no hand support followed by 1898's depiction of a Viparitakarani” A.K.A shoulder chair that was posted in The New York Herald showing full hand support.
Moving on to 1931 and Legs in the Air” from Building the Body Beautiful The Bagot-Stack Stretch and Swing System.
In our first clip from back 1938 Krishnamacharya & B.K.S. Iyengar show some variations of the Viparitakarani specifically a crossed split and a piked vesion.
Second clip is a blink and you miss it moment of a child from somewhere between 1941 - 1939 in Chapel Hill- NC performing the Viparitakarani on the street for the camera.
Next another photo (I promise it's the last one) from 1940 - A very young Indra Devi teaching the Russian, Michael Volin, in China.
The last and longest of all the clips we have B.K.S. Iyengar showing once again even more variations of the Viparitakarani among them some that are very similar to the ones in breaking as you can see in the comparison section at the end of the video.

The cricket, one of the foundational moves for freezes in breaking.
Where does it come from? From the research so far acrobats and contortionists seem to be the originators of it (although the turtle version seems to have been in Yoga way waaaay before) later on finding it's way into floor gymnastics and eventually into breaking as demonstrated by Bruce almighty.
