The final two days of Marxfest took place at the Coney Island Museum, where we came across this ca. 1935 ad for the Mermaid Theatre, a 550-seat neighborhood bijou that opened in the 1910s and closed in the 1960s. The Mermaid was one of the first in Brooklyn to tout its “air-cooled comfort,” achieved with a large fan blowing air across a big block of ice (though cooled air was surely not needed for the mid-January line-up this ad was promoting).

We would happily pay good money to see any of these movies at the Mermaid, if only it were still in operation.
